Cloth Diapering

Teething rash?

DS has never really been prone to diaper rash, but lately we've been battling it.  I thought it was because he was sensitive to wetness, but I've tried different diapers and liners and, although it gets a little better, it's not clearing up completely. He's been fussy, drooling, sucking non-stop, waking more and has a rash around his mouth so I assume he's teething.  Will his rash eventually just go away on its own once he get through this phase? Are there any diaper creams that are better for this sort of thing?

Re: Teething rash?

  • This is happening to us too, so I am curious to see the responses.  My daughter has had an odd diaper rash all week that we've been treating with CJs butter as it seemed to be helping it.  I just noticed an hour ago, that she has a tooth (her first) that is about to pop through! I remember the pediatrician saying that rashes and teething can go hand-in-hand for some babies.  I sure hope it clears up!

DS is currently cutting 8 teeth (!), and he's had on and off severe diaper rash for a month or so now. On his really bad days when he drools a lot, his poo is more peanut-buttery (ew), and sometimes his bum goes from clear to blistered after a single poo. At that point it was so bad that we had to use disposables and desitin until it healed. We were using California baby, but I DO NOT recommend it to anyone now. It seems that any time he has any sort of teething-related redness/rash and I put CA baby cream on, he screams and grabs at the area like it's burning. I have a big tub of CJ's on the way, thankfully, in the meantime, his rash has cleared. Here are some suggestions (copy/pasting from a post I made on the toddler board earlier tonight):

Lots of diaper free time. When I have the time after I take off his dirty diaper, I lay the clean diaper under his bum and try to entertain him for a few minutes on the changing table to let his skin dry off.

During a bath, I put baking soda in the water (just enough to make the water cloudy) to keep the water from burning the rashy skin.

We cloth diaper, so we switch to disposables and use Desitin. Our pediatrician suggested butt paste if the desitin didn't clear it up, but we never had to try that.

We also change more frequently--like once every 1 1/2-2 hours.

If you use disposable wipes, it might be worthwhile to just wipe with water for a bit. There's a little alcohol in the disposable wipes, and that can really burn irritated skin.

Also, I recently read that dabbing milk of magnesia on with a cottonball and allowing it to dry before putting on a fresh diaper is really helpful. Thankfully, DS's rash has cleared up, and I'm hoping to not have to test that theory.

This is wonderful advice! My DS also gets terrible rashes while teething, and I also found that the only think that cleared it up was desitin and sposies. GL, it can be extremely frusterating!

  • Every time DD would cut a tooth she'd end up with the mother of all rashes. Her poor backside would be so red.

    Here is what helped us:

    -naked bum time

    -baking soda in the bath

-GroVia Magic Stick or Grandma El's, the only two creams I have found that are safe for CD's and actually work with a real rash

-if the rash was really bad a sposie overnight with a cream with zinc oxide cream (we use Sudocrem)
