omg I looked up the MMR

Has anyone else gotten this shot? I am freaking out now. Lots of people report getting violently ill, a full body rash, high fevers, a link to autism, and even seizures. I am almost regretting getting this shot. I should have researched it further. All of these incidents occurred around the 7th day after the shot. I am dreading that day.

Has no one gotten this?

Re: omg I looked up the MMR

  • My older DD had the MMR at a year. No reaction whatsoever, not even a little fever. DD2 will get it at her appt on Tuesday.

FWIW, there are zero credible sources linking vaccines and autism. The MMR can cause a rash and fever, but the truly serious reactions are rare. Here's the link to the CDC fact sheet, the second page lists the risks and chances of them occuring:

  • Okay, I've read a little more. The one website I was in was totally biased. Anyway, the reactions are scary. So I advise everyone to keep a close eye if your LO received the shot.

My DD has now developed a runny nose and pulling at her ear. I think a trip to the doctor is in our future. I want to make sure these symptoms are side effects and not something else.

Okay. Thanks. I feel a little better now that I've read more.

  •  It is one of the main vaccines they give children. Q got this shot last week. Today he's running a low fever and a bit cranky, but our doctor warned us this was a very real possibility.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives in almost every case.

Lets be clear there is no proof that mmr causes autism!

I hope she feels better soon.

No it doesn't. But that one website was so biased saying that it did. I wouldn't say it was a reputable source.

Linz the stuff I have read said that reactions can occur almost immediately and then up till around the 25th day after receiving it. So lots of days where the reactions can show up. Poor T. But she has been so whiny and grumpy, it worries me. She's NEVER like this and has never been sick before. Ugh, I hate being helpless. Im going to get some ibuprofen tonight and try that.

I know about the side effects and you can bet we will be getting the shot. I'll take a few days of illness over measles, mumps, and/or rubella any day.

I should be more clear, I didn't mean to not get the vaccines at all. But there is the option to get the MMR which is a combined immunization or you can separate them into individual shots over a period of time. But after reading more, its not proven that separating them is any better. Its just one of those things they gotta go through. :[

    Yes

This was a bit dramatic, ginger. Our pedi told us it was normal for them to feel icky after getting the shots and recommended waiting til after her birthday and any parties because of it.

Hope she starts feeling better soon.. It really is for the best.

  • I'm pretty sure G had the MMR. He had a little bit of a fever for a day afterwards but then was fine. Better than measles or mumps, imo.

    Yes

I'm sorry your so concerned about the shot, Ginger. It's good to be informed but just make sure you have reliable sources.
I'm sure she won't have any problems with the shotSmile

  • Both my older children have had both doses of MMR and have never even developed a fever.  If your LO hasn't had an immediate reaction to the shot, I would think she'd be fine.  As for the link to autism...it has been dis proven and the doctor, if I remember correctly, has lost his license for creating and/doctoring data that he collected.  IMHO not getting the vaccine and actually contracting one of the three viruses would be far worse than the side effects.

  • DD just got hers along with the flu shot.  It has only been 2 days.  Our pedi mentioned that this is one that parents get most worried about because it contains live virus but severe reactions are rare.
  • I'm glad to hear that a lot of people got the shot with no major reactions.  L gets hers on Monday, and her party is on Saturday.  She's never had really bad reactions to shots before, so hopefully she will be okay!

  • Something else to keep in mind when using Dr. Google... For every person who posts somewhere that their kid got "violently ill" there are a ton of people whose kids had no reaction. It's much more common for someone to take the time to post about a bad reaction then for someone to come online to say "hey, my kid got the MMR and didn't react at all! WDYT?" ;)

  • Please keep in mind, ladies, that if your child got sick after the one year visit, it's highly likely it's just because you were IN THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE. Once your child is mobile, a visit to the doctor almost guarantees they'll pick up something while there. That's not saying to not keep an eye out for a vaccine reaction - but those reactions are incredibly rare.

As your kid ages, and you see what I mean about getting sick at well visits (if you haven't already), you'll pretty much only visit the pedi if it's absolutely necessary.
