Ruby412:It makes me really sad that we live in a country where medical care is a privilege, not a right. I know there are options out there, but this just shouldn't be something someone who is sick should have to worry about! You deserve to get the care you need without going broke over it. I mean, our kids go to school for free, we have free police services and firefighters. But, medical care? Not so much. It's a shame you don't live closer to Canada! Okay, rant over.
Hey, Ruby. I am quoting the last post from Gisa's thread because I didn't want to hijack it.
The things you listed are not free. We pay taxes for them. With increased taxes, you, too, can have 'free' healthcare.
But first read what this guy has to say.
https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Sweat-Tea-Adventures-Inner-City/dp/0740771191
He talks about 45 minute waits for ambulances. Non-transport units responding to urgent calls because the clock stops when the first first responder arrives and not getting transportation for way to long for way too sick of patients.
Did you know one used to have to pay 'volunteer' firefighters up front before they put out the fire?
Re: S/O Insurance Woes
Not to hijack, but you know that guy is talking about the London EMT, right?
I once had a picture until the trolls showed up.

"If we weren't all crazy we would go insane."
Yup. Thus the tea. Not the hockey .
ETA: I am not saying it can't be done right. But it would require some major restructuring and serious organization. As it stands I don't want the same people who run the DMV scheduling surgeries.
Hey geeky! I have not read the book you linked, but I do know that our taxes pay for the social services I listed. I'm a public school teacher, so taxes pay my salary!
That said, I think we could allocate more tax money to health insurance relief for those who don't have it. Do you know how many uninsured people end up very sick or die from not getting preventative care?
I lived abroad in London and had a friend who broke his leg and another friend who got a lung infection. Both were given excellent care from start to finish including medications. It was fully covered. So, that is my personal experience with socialized healthcare - pretty awesome.
I don't have the answers. I just look at my BIL and SIL who are both currently unemployed and I worry what will happen if one of them has an injury or gets very ill. Their kids are on our state's public healthcare program, but what will the kids do if their mom and dad get hurt or sick??
It sucks either way. I was really supportive of the whole universal healthcare thing until it got butchered. I felt like we should have just dove in the deep end, and instead we are wading in slowly.
I think it is going to end up being a terrible hybrid of insurance meets federalized healthcare. Insurance companies won't let a true socialization of healthcare happen (lobbying for everything) and we are going to end up in a different kind of sucky situation.
I blame insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, and malpractice lawsuits for the high cost of healthcare. The governments with socialized healthcare still have to pay for it all, but they cap the amount medical procedures can cost.
And on this, my friend, we totally agree.
