Cervical length and dilation

We knew there could be cervical shortening issues.

2 leeps (2006 & 2007) left me w/ 2/3 cervix.  Thankfully, I must have had a longer one to begin with as at 20 weeks it was still 2.87cm; 28 weeks 2.5cm; 30 weeks 2cm, 32 weeks 1cm.  Not dilated a full cm yet, but "slightly opening" as Dr said.  Wants me in weekly now.  Baby is large, thanks to 6'5" DH, and prob about 4 lbs.  I'm measuring small (29), but Dr said that's fine.  No more eliptical...walking, yoga, light weights only.  They could give me something until 34 weeks to delay dilation (forgot what it is), but after 34 wks, anything's fair game.

Anyone have experience with this?  What was the outcome?

March 2011: Off Nuva, cycle back to "normal" for me: No periods since 15 years old. June 2011:Provera&50 mg Clomid; Progesterone:0.7 July 2011:Provera&100mg Clomid; Progesterone:3.29 Met with RE:No Clomid response, begin injectables Sep 5 mg Letrozole and Ovidrel in the interim month. Cut out running (was a distance-runner), cycling, eliptical. Restricted to weight-training, walking, pilates. Brain MRI normal. Being physically over-stressed is the reason the body stopped producing prog. Late Sep 2011: Menopur, Ovidrel,& IUI (10.10.11):BFN-Great injectable response: 2 mature, 6 near mature, many smaller; Problem: 9 cysts! Dr: IUI too uncontrolled for number of viable eggs & age. On to IVF! IVF ER 12.6: 37 mature eggs, 27 fertilized, froze all to avoid overstimulation; FET 1.22 (2 Grade 1)=BFN; FET 2.22 (3 Grade 2)=BFP! Beta 10dp3dt=291; 12dp3dt=644; HB 3.26!! 174 bpm: Vanishing twin almost completely absorbed 10wks Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: Cervical length and dilation

  • My cervix is shortening but I am not dilating, and I am 31 weeks along. Last week my measurement dropped from 2.8 to 1.8 and I was immediately put on strict bed rest to prevent pre-term labor. I am also going in weekly for continued measurements. Besides limited activity, did your OB mention anything about bed rest?

ETA: sorry, lurking on this board from high-risk. I am a FTM so no outcomes for you :o)

  • I found out at a routine ultrasound at 26 weeks that my cervix was 1.5 and "dynamic."  I was immediately given a first round of steroids, put on home bedrest and nightly progesterone suppositories.  I had weekly cervical checks which showed little change.

I went in for an ultrasound again at 29 weeks.  They found that I had at most .3 left and I was dilated to 1.  They immediately put me on hospital bedrest. I started to lose pieces of my mucus plug during that week and the week prior. I went into labor about 6 days into my hospital bedrest.  I felt "off" for a day and a half with deceased appetite and increased pressure. once I was in labor, it went really fast.  8 hours from the time it was apparent I was in labor until I gave birth.  I was given mag to try and stop the labor, but it didn't work and my water broke. My DD spent 6 weeks in the NICU and was primarily a feeder/grower.

By the way -- your sampling pool is going to give you skewed results since the ladies on this board all ended up with preemies.  My doc said that I had a 50% chance of going full term when he found my cervical problems.  There is just no good predictor tools for which high-risk ladies will early and which will go to term.
