Article: Can obesity cause bad eggs in women undergoing IVF?

Something to ask @ my WTF:

"In order for an egg to have the best chance of fertilizing and supporting embryo development, it should be mature with one spindle (egg structure). However the study points out that nearly 60 percent of of the eggs from the obese group had two spindles. This study was published in the Journal of Human Reproduction, and goes on to suggest that body weight even affects egg quality among people who are infertile and seeking infertility treatments such as IVF."

I've never been told what my spindle situation is; now I'm wondering...

Re: Article: Can obesity cause bad eggs in women undergoing IVF?

  • My RE didn't say anything as specific as spindles, but he did indicate that my weight may have contributed to my poor egg quality. He said that in some cases, substantial weight loss may restore egg quality, but that if the poor egg quality was unrelated to weight, then it will not.

That was a significant factor in our decision to move on to adoption--even IF (and that's an all caps if for a reason) I had been able to achieve and maintain significant weight loss and do IVF again, my eggs still might suck.

Thanks for sharing the article. It's good to know some more of the specifics
