We will be a family of 5 in February and just bought a second/family car. Until now our only car has been a beetle, we bought a 2004 Honda Pilot. It's kind of a nice balance because the 3 kids will easily fit across the middle row (we've already tried installing the infant bucket to see, there was a ton of space for my booster rider to buckle around the other two seats), but we have the third row when we have extra kids and adults. The storage with the 3rd row up is small, but still more than we're used to. With the 3rd row down there is a ton of storage (again, coming from a small car person lol!). I felt like it was the perfect balance of extra seating, enough storage and not horrible on purchase cost or gas mileage.
We aren't a family of five, but hope to add to our family in the future so we recently purchased a 2009 Honda Pilot. It has a ton of room and it's 4wd.
I have an XC90 and you do not want one...way too small for what you have described! Its too small for us traveling most of the time...we will have to leave our dog at home from now on when the new baby comes b/c there will be no room for luggage and him! The new style suburbans are huge but very comfy with tons of space!
I have an XC 60, which we love but the 90 is really not much bigger and I don't think it would be big enough for you. I think it would be worth checking out the Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia. These reminded me of minivans but with more cargo space and the fuel economy for a large SVU isn't too bad.

Re: Looking for a new vehicle next spring...help!
We are a family of 3 + cat, so I'm of no help. We love our Volvo XC60 and it has much more storage room than my old X3.
Maybe an XC90 is a good fit for you? Can't beat the safety.

We just bought a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Love the safety and the cargo room for our black lab. Only two rows of seating however.
I know that the Suburban has three rows of seating, but that is a big boy.
My uncle has a Chevy Tahoe that has three rows as well. But I think they only offer that with the V-8.
Personally, I love the Jeep and the room that it goves us. But I say that as a parent of a newborn, not five kids.
Oh, what color do you have?
