when to switch to toddler bed!

so when are u all makinf the big transition? our crib converts, so we will use it as a toddler bed for a short time then switch to twin/full. i am thinking we will switch around 18 months. we have been slowly intoducing potty training, which she already is telling us when she has to go when her diaper is off. I will seriously potty train ariund 18 months and i think at that rime i should switch her bed so she can get up and go to the potty.

let me know what u r doing and what suggestions u have!

Re: when to switch to toddler bed!

  • We plan on doing about the same thing. DD has just started showing interest in the potty and can sign it do we will potty train when I am off for Christmas. I want her sleeping a little better before moving to the toddler bed but once she stops waking up at night we will switch. Now she still gets up once for her paci. Taking that away this weekend if all goes well.

  • Potty training?!?! Wow. DD is nowhere near ready for that. As for a bed, I've read that waiting until they show interest in wanting to climb out is a good indicator that it's time to switch. So we plan on waiting until she starts to want out. If she is happy in her crib, I have no plans to move her. In general, anytime I've pushed her to move on, it backfires. So I've come to realize that if I just wait and take cues from her, life is better for everyone :-)

PS - I know someone who moved her son to a regular bed (twin size) at 13 months. Yep. 13 months. So when you think your kiddo is ready, go for it! You know your LO better than anyone else!

  • I plan on putting it off until he tries to escape from his crib or we need the crib for #2, whatever comes first.  Vito is nowhere near being ready to sleep in a bed.  He would be all over the place if he had free rein in his room.

Exactly this. She is perfectly happy in her crib, so I'm not going to throw off her routine just because she's a toddler now.

No plans to potty train until next summer (@2yrs, which is still early from what I've heard). I was planning on starting in the Spring, but now that we will have a new LO, I am going to wait until summer is over (done traveling) and the stigma from the new baby has worn off.

  • We'll move Em to a twin mattress on the floor around Dec/Jan when we're ready for the new baby to move out of our room and into the nursery.

On that note: where do I find cute sheet sets for kids? I looked at a couple mall department stores and found nothing. Am I going to have to go online? But even a quick Amazon search just brought up characters, like Dora or something, which I don't really want, or huge bedding sets with pillows and all that. I just want a fitted and flat sheet, maybe a pillow case. And when do they start using a pillow? And do they use a certain kind for kids or just a normal pillow you get somewhere like Target? Sorry for the hijack!

  • 2 or 3?  I'm in no rush.  If I get pregnant again maybe before the new baby comes or if he potty trains before then but otherwise he'll stay in his crib for a while still.

  • Just put him on a twin mattress on the floor with agate around it. Well be starting potty training soon. We've done a little here and there, and he's done well with it, so I'm excited to start
  • I will probably keep her in the crib until she can figure her way out... Although today she spend the day in the toddler room at daycare and she did nap on the cot, so it may be sooner than I was expecting. We'll see.

  • I'm not pregnant currently but we will probably start trying around the beginning of the year. The new baby will have her crib so probably when she is around 2 1/2.
  • My Lo has been showing signs, being a big girl and playing in her room by her self. Tonight I converted the crib into a day bed. So far everything has been normal. Our first night in the big girl bed.

  • We've also been gradually introducing DD to potty training. With the new baby on the way, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll be fully potty trained by the time he/she arrives!

As for the toddler bed, ditto the 18 month timeframe. I'd like to get DD fully adjusted before the next LO is born, so that she doesn't associate so many changes (some of which may be difficult at first) with the new baby.

  • Potty training hasn't even crossed my mind, but we'll switch to a bed whenever he tries to climb out of his crib. Otherwise, I like him contained!

  • I plan to follow Avery's lead. She is in no way ready for a toddler bed or lofty training. I am sure it will be st least two before either happen.

  • I am in zero rush for this. Whenever she tries to climb out, which I'm thinking could be a while since she's on the short side.

  • We're not even thinking about potty training yet either!

Our plan is to make the switch at around 21 months -- when Baby #2 will probably be too big for the bassinet and will need the crib.  DD is just transitioning to the toddler room at daycare where she has to sleep on a cot on the floor and she's doing really well with that.  I'm hoping she'll be more than ready for a twin bed at that point!

  • When we have another LO or she starts climbing out, whichever comes first. We are skipping the toddler bed and going straight to a regular bed with rails.

  • I also plan on starting to potty train at 18 mos but still want her to let me know when she needs to go. I am not comfortable with her wandering around by herself in the middle of the night.

  • The tentative plan is to move him to a twin bed a few months before baby #2 arrives. Not sure when that will be yet. We are TTC so it's *possible* we'd move him as young as 21 months but we'll just have to see how the timing shakes out. If he's really not ready then, I guess we'll just have to buy another crib.

Potty training is FAR off for us.

  • I have no idea.

My first thought was around 2 for both... but now we are going to have a new baby at that time and I know it will be hard on C/a big transition.  I don't know whether to do it before the new baby gets here or wait until after.

Ditto this! It will be interesting to see how our LOs change in the next 9 months...I mean, when I think of how they were 9 months ago, who knows? Maybe they'll be ready!

  • I've been wondering when to do this as well. I imagine chaos going on in his room if he was not stuck in his crib... From running around, taking things out of drawers. Wow, it would be a mess. He hasn't tried to get out of the crib yet so hoping we can make it a while longer.
