Delayed milk coming in?

I don't think my milk has fully come in yet.  I haven't felt engorged at all and only occasionally feel slight hardness to my boobs.  I took a day off of feeding directly from the boob to pump for a day yesterday to give my nipples a day to heal and my milk only comes out in drips.  I get about 1.5 ounces from each boob.  It was barely enough to keep LO fed for the day. I read somewhere that it can sometimes take up to 10 days but I'm worried that my milk has come in and I'm just having supply problems.  The milk that comes out has the tiniest (and I mean tiniest) of yellow tinges to it.  Does anyone have any advise or insight to this?

  • 1.5 ounces from each boob is pretty good in the beginning. Also remember that the pump doesn't get nearly as much out as the baby.

In the beginning your baby is only going to eat 23 ounces at a feeding so your boobs are producing the exact amount that the baby needs. Also remember that nursing is a 24 hour thing. So, if LO ate 2 ounces at 5:00 today, they'll produce the same amount at 5:00 tomorrow.

If you are really worried, there is fenugreek, blessed thistle and mothers milk tea that you can try. But honestly you sound like you're doing great!

  • I agree with all of this. If the baby weren't getting enough, he/she would be demanding to eat constantly. Give your body sone time and if you're worried, contact a LC from your hospital. GL!
  • I agree with PP, it sounds like you are doing fine. If you are concerned though, I recommend not pumping for the first few weeks. It is not the same as nursing and can diminish your supply. I used a nipple shield to help my nipples heal and it worked very well.

  • Haven't read the other comments, so sorry if I'm repeating what's already been said...

Anyhow, 1.5 oz per boob is pretty good, actually. The pump isn't nearly as efficient as the baby! Also, I pretty much only drip--and I've got an oversupply. And remember, there are only 2 major indications of a supply problem: not having consistent weight gain and/or not enough wet/soiled diapers a day.

There was a couple of days in the beginning where I was worried about my supply. I made a feeding/diaper log for a couple of days, as suggested on kellymom.com, and learned that DD and I were doing fine! So for you peace of mind, maybe check out that site, and spend a couple of days logging LO's feeds and diaper count!
