Birth Announcements as Christmas Cards?

If our baby is born towards the end of the month, and we don't anticipate getting  birth announcements sent until mid-October (I wanted to get newborn shots of baby to add to the announcement), does it make sense to just wait a few more weeks and combine the birth announcements with our holiday cards for this year?

I don't want to seem like we are inundating people with cards of our baby; not to mention the time and expense two sets of cards could take.

How is everyone else planning to deal with this?  If the baby were born in February, or November, I would know exactly what to do, but late September seems like a grey area.

Re: Birth Announcements as Christmas Cards?

  • I think we're just going to send out both.

Have you considered sending out Christmas cards with a family letter and include a picture of LO? I love getting Christmas cards with the family letter. I prefer those to the Christmas cards that are just a picture with "Merry Christmas! Love, Bob, Sue, Ann, James and Rover" printed on it.

  • We are just combining ours as a holiday card as well and sending it out in November. Mostly everyone who we would send the announcement to will have heard the news/come to visit/seen pictures by the time we would send out an announcement, and they also wouldn't care about timing.

Well, most of them wouldn't care. The only one who gets pissy about "etiquette" not being followed is DH's grandmother, and she has been nothing but negative about everything with this pregnancy so far. So she will wait with everyone else :P

ETA: My family and close friends are also very much into the emailed birth announcements, especially right after the fact.  Everyone will get an email with the LO's arrival date, weight, and pictures within a few days (along with posting on FB), then we are sending an official "announcement" and holiday card in late November, right after Thanksgiving.

Part of it is a super tight budget thing for us, part of it is the norm in my circle of family/friends.

  • I think you need to do two separate. I have my newborn pics scheduled for the 24th and plan to send out the first week of October. Holiday cards won't go out until after thanksgiving.

  • Depends on when I get my act together.

I like the idea of sticking the birth announcement in with our Xmas card/letter...good way to save on postage and isn't such a "send meeeeee gifts" type of announcement for a second kid.

And I hate family letters, lol. OP, we're doing two sets of cards. I figure a mid-late September picture of baby is too early to use for Christmas.

  • We will send out our birth announcements just before Halloween. They will only have a pic of the baby and hopefully a cute pic of both the boys. We will send out a Christmas card with all of us (this will give me a couple months to lose the weight).

With DS, we sent out a card on all the holidays for the first year to our family and very close friends (Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter...). Everyone commented on how much the loved getting them.

  • I totally combining, but I'm due at the end of the month. The reason I'm combing is the fact that most of my friends/relatives didn't get annoucements out until about 2 months after their babies were born...so I'm following suit which puts me at the end of Nov. beginning of Dec. Secondly, I'm trying to save money like a crazy woman these days and I just can't justify doing two mailings.

That being said, you could always consider doing a massive birth annoucement mailing and then just do holiday cards to close friends and family....just a suggestion. GL!

  • We are doing a combo one, because of price. I can't justify sending out 2 cards so close together. People will get to see pictures of her on FB and what we email, but no cards until end of November/begining of Dec.

  • I'm doing 2--I want her to have a keepsake that's about her and not feel like she got bundled with a holiday 3 months away.
