Baby Names

Keely

Today, whilst playing my favourite game with DH (What Would We Name Our Hypothetical Daughter), I threw out the name Keely. He surprised me by deciding he kinda liked it.

It's not the kind of name I usually go for, but I don't dislike it. I guess I'm trying to figure out how I feel about it. Behindthename.com says it's Anglicised from an Irish surname, which is a sketchier history than I usually go for, but I do like the sound of it. What does everyone think of Keely/Keeley for a girl?

Re: Keely

  • Love it!! I can find girl names I like but boy names seem more difficult to both of us to agree on.
  • Like it. I went to Grad School with a Kealy.

  • One of my relatives used this for his daughter. She was such a sweet, bright, smiley little thing (I haven't seen her in years), so the name always makes me smile.

It's NMS personally, but I don't hate it on someone else's kid.

  • It's not something I would ever use, but it is pretty. I think it just sounds a bit young/cutesy to me.
  • I know a Kealy in her 30s and a Keely who is 10. I think I prefer the former spelling. I like that name right from when I first met the lady it belonged to. The Keely spelling seems a bit childish to me.

  • For me, it sounds cute for a little girl, but not an adult woman.

This. I do know someone who is 30ish with this name and it suits her well.

  • I think it's an adorable name, but I just can't see it on an adult.

But if you love the name, use it!

  • I don't like it, not sure why just sounds funny to me.
  • I know a Keely irl, and it fits her. I think it's a fine name.

  • I really like it :)  It was on my list, but DH wouldn't go for it.  I was really surprised to see that it was originally a male name -- it sounds very feminine to me!

  • Nope.  Reminds me too much of Kelly, and I want to correct it.

  • Keely/Keeley isn't my usual style, but I do kind of like it.  Unfortunately I think it would fall into the Kinley, Kylie, Kinsley type of group sometimes.

  • I don't like Keely. I group it with the enormous list of cutesy and trendy "K" names Kylie, Kayla, Kyla, Kaylan, etc. I knew a Keely in college and her name always annoyed me. She had an twin sister Lauren and I felt she got the very short end of the stick.

  • I want to like it, but I don't think it ages well. It's tough for us to find an Irish girl name we like...

  • Since the only Keely I know is an adult, I don't really have an aging issue with the name. I think it's cute.

  • Hate it, sorry. It sounds immature and cutesy. I can't imagine a "Grandma Keely," or even a CEO or judge with the name.
