seroquel in pregnancy

Has anyone needed to take this for bipolar illness? I know its a Cat C but I'd like to hear personal experiences.

Re: seroquel in pregnancy

  • If your doctor says its ok i wouldn't worry to much.  Better to stay stable during pregnancy then switch with the possibility of not reacting well to a new med.  Just my opinion.  Good Luck

  • Please contact your dr immediately so that you can discuss the risks. My dr told me that it was fetal toxic after I miscarried. I was only taking a small dose for sleep and anxiety and stopped once I got a bfp, but I can't help but wonder if it attributed to my loss.

Here is something I found online.
The offspring that were born during the Seroquel trials on pregnant rats and rabbits demonstrated low birth weight as well as slowed development. There was also an increase in miscarriages in the animals receiving Seroquel during pregnancy.

I do not mean to scare you as I am not a dr, I'm just sharing my experience.

  • One of my very good friends took seroquel while she was pregnant (with dr.s permission) and her daughter is absolutely perfect, normal birth weight and developing normally at 18 months.

Like with any medication during pregnancy, you have to discuss with your doctor to decide if the benefits may outweigh the risks for your particular situation. Good luck!

  • I agree with PPs talk to your doctor, your pharmacist may also be a good resource. Good luck!

  • I took Seroquel beginning in about month 4 (had tried going without medication and it became apparent that was creating a much bigger problem).  I took between 200 and 400 mg months 4 through 9.  I did not have any problems related to the Seroquel, and my now 12-week old daughter is perfectly healthy.  My OB enrolled me in a study which Massachusetts General Hospital is currently doing on antipsychotic medications and pregnancy.  You may want to look into this to help other women in the future.  You don't have to be located in Massachusetts to take part in the study (I'm actually on the West coast).  Please feel free to ask me anything at all; I know how hard it is to find others with this experience.
  • Definitely talk to both your OB and your psychiatrist (even better if your psych has experience working with women/reproductive health issues).

It seems like some studies show developmental delays at high doses of seroquel during pregnancy, but that doesn't mean that the potential benefits don't outweigh the risks for you.

    GL!
