We had our first u/s today and both estimates previously given to us (8 weeks was given to us 2 weeks ago by my reg doctor, based on hCG, and 10-12 weeks was given to me by my OB last week, based on where my uterus is sitting) were totally wrong. Our little peanut is measuring in at 8 weeks, 6 days. Heartbeat was 166. Everything looks great and we're SO excited!
There were, however, a couple issues. The first is that my heart murmur sounds a little more pronounced. I now have to go for an EKG and echo cardiogram next week to make sure all is well with my heart.
Also, they did a urine test and found that I have protein and ketones in my urine. Has anyone ever had this problem?? They said they're still waiting for more results to come back to tell me what it might mean, but it makes me nervous.
Also, I had to get MORE blood work done to check my blood type (again). I got a call from the receptionist at the OB's office earlier this week saying I'll need a rhogam shot because I'm O- and I just said okay and hung up with her. As I continued getting ready for work, I realized that my donor card from the Red Cross definitely says that I'm O+. SO, bit of a dilemma there. I don't know which one scares me more, the fact that the lab that does my blood work at the Dr. might be screwing up my results...or the fact that the Red Cross, who hands out blood to so many people all the time, could be wrong. Has anyone ever been in a similar situation??
Lastly, here's a pic of our little peanut. I'm in love already.
Re: We had our first u/s today! (questions & picture inside)
The proteins in your urine usually means something is off with your kidneys. I had this once with a kidney infection. Kind of painful (like a bad bladder infection) but easily treated. No idea about the ketones. Google says it means you don't have enough sugar or carbs in your body.https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003585.htm
I wouldn't worry too much about the dating being off because it's based on a 28 day cycle which not all women have.
I would be sure to let the OB know about the blood type discrepancy. I'd bet the red cross double checks the blood types before they give them out.
Congrats on a good u/s. Seeing that little heart flutter for the first time is the best feeling!
That is weird about your blood type, I don't know which one I would rather be correct.
Have you been having a lot of morning sickness, or have you not been eating much in the way of carbohydrates? The presence of ketones in your urine is usually due to something along those lines, where your body doesn't have enough carbohydrates to break down for energy, so it starts breaking down protein instead, and the by-product is ketones.
As for the presence of protein in your urine, there are multiple reasons that could occur. Not sure off the top of my head if it would be related to the ketones.
Definitely, definitely tell your OB that there is a discrepancy with your blood type, if only so that he/she can contact the lab to make sure whether it was on their end or not and obviously to have you retested. In this case, it is better for you to be accidentally labelled an O- than accidentally labelled an O+, but the lab needs to get it right, because if they screwed yours up, who knows if they've screwed up others in the opposite way which is very, very life threatening to that person.
Also, once you get that figured out and have the right answer, make sure you tell the Red Cross next time you go to give blood. Yes, they will definitely be checking your blood type many multiple times again before giving that unit away to a person (and the hospital retypes it again more than once as well), but your card should say the right thing.
If you have your card in your wallet and there is an emergency, and someone pulls that card from your wallet and orders emergency release blood for you based on that Red Cross card (not very likely, but still could happen), then you will likely die. It is extremely dangerous to give O+ blood to a person that is actually O-.
Sorry to sound so adamant about this, but I work in a hospital laboratory for a living, and blood banking/typing is one of the most sensitive areas of the lab in terms of importance and ability to easily kill someone. It needs to be done right.

I did tell my Dr. about the discrepancy in my blood type. They re-drew blood yesterday, so hopefully I'll have an answer on Monday.
I have had horrible morning sickness, but the only time I'm throwing up is first thing in the morning and it's usually just stomach acid. I've been feeling pretty sick and not eating a ton, but most of what I do eat is carbs so I'm really not sure about the ketones.
