Total change in behavior?

When Foster was in the NICU, he was one of the calmest babies there--all the other babies might have been upset and crying, but he would just stay calm. Then he was the same when we came home--he never escalated to screaming crying ever--the most it would be is just a little fussing.

In the past week, though, it's totally turned around--nothing makes him happy. He even manages to cry with a pacifier in! If he's fussing because he's wet and I change him it doesn't stop his fussing. I've tried to rule out any causes (hunger, sickness, gas, etc.)--he's just become inconsolable at times.

I don't expect anyone on here to be able to come up with a quick fix, but could there be another reason that I'm overlooking that's causing him discomfort? Might it just be normal, like with a growth spurt? Do any of you have experience with this--perhaps one set of behaviors really early on (prior to EDD), and another that came out after?

  • I am as new to this as you are, but I think it could be totally normal. DD has gotten progressively more demanding, especially recently - since her EDD. I told my mom about it today, and she was like, "Yeah, that sounds right on schedule with her due date - it seems like full term babies sort of wake up at 2 weeks old and start to have lots of opinions about things."

I think with a preemie, you sort of get lulled into a false sense of security because they are in that sleepy, brand-new newborn state for a longer time.

But I am sure the more experienced moms will chime in. :)

  • Thanks--I feel a little better just knowing that it's not just him that pulled a 180. I'll talk to his doctor and see if it might be reflux/colic or something like that.

  • I think with preemies they hit a point where they start to wake up more.  They do say the fussies peak between 6-8 weeks and many babies have a "witching hour" where they are very fussy for a period of time, usually afternoon/evening.

I would say things really got better around 3 months.  DD was not near as gassy, she was sleeping better, and she started interacting more.  Hang in there!  We had many days where I would spend hours trying to soothe her.

I have to agree with this.  Both of mine started doing the same thing about 2 weeks ago.  We call it "the song of our people" when they start getting super fussy and screaming.  There are times we've gone through the checklist of stuff to do and they are still upset.  Of course, once one is upset the other also gets upset so it's a no win situation. lol
