XP: Did you interview before choosing an OB?

Ok, just want to start off this post by saying that this is the first time I've ever been pregnant so I hope it doesn't come off sounding silly or ignorant, but I'd really like to hear everyone's experiences choosing an OB.

I've heard people talk about "interviewing" OBs to find the best one.  I wasn't too keen on the idea, I figured if my insurance approves and the reviews are good, I'd pick that one.  Obviously, I would go elsewhere if red flags came up or the service was terrible.  But now I'm hearing things about seeing if your doc has a high C-section or induction rate (things I wouldn't want to have unless absolutely necessary), but how can I check that unless I ask?  Is there a website or something that tracks that?

Did anyone actually interview a few (or several) OBs before choosing one?  Does insurance even approve those appointments?  I'm new to my area so unfortunately I don't have any local friends to give me their personal recommendations.

  • I picked an obgyn that I thought I'd like and saw her for an annual. I did like her, so I've stayed there. I didn't look up csection or induction rates, isn't that hospital based and not provider? but I trust my doctor not to push anything unnecessary on me.

  • I just used my regular OBGYN, I don't see why you'd get someone new.

  • My old OB is about 25 miles from my home; I was still going to him for the past 5 years after I moved, but I knew I'd want to switch OBs once I became pregnant. The day I received a positive pregnancy test, I called my general practitioner and asked him for recommendations. He asked which hospital I wanted to deliver at, and then gave me the name of my current OB. Turns out, he's really great! So if you don't have anyone else you can ask, ask your doctor to give you a few names and see who fits in with your insurance.

Ditto this.  When I needed a new dentist because I moved, I asked my old dentist, who I loved, to recommend someone in my area.  She did and I've had a good experience with the new dentist.  People in the same field know each other, and if you liked who you saw before, they will recommend someone similar.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • It's your right to ask any questions. Look at their websites, mine had all her credentials online. Plus I saw her in the beginning for infertility so that's why I was so interested in her background. But I fell in love with her and she's always listened. GL!!!

I would discourage you from solely looking at c-section rates.... really good OB's may have higher c-section rates b/c they take care of more high risk patients, so I don't really think that is a good thing to use solely as your decision making tool.  It may be scewed b/c the doc is actually good!

This. I looked up my doc online and she is one of the best OBGYNs on the east coast. I never asked what her c/s rate was and even though I ended up with a c/s, I knew it was what was best for baby after 16 hrs of labor. I had my first appointment with her and if I felt uncomfortable in any way I would have gone elsewhere.

  • I sympathize that it hard being new to the area so you don't have the chance to find one that you like through your annual visits. Ditto what the other posters said about asking your current doc (if you like him/her) for a recommendation. I got lucky, I found a doc that is awesome! When I went in for my confirmation of pregnancy he came in and gave me a big hug!! Make sure you find someone who will take the time to answer questions since, if this is your first pregnancy (it is for me!) you will have lots of questions!
