November 2011 Moms

Would you get a 2nd opinion?

LO was born with a heart murmur. He had an u/s at the hospital and the specialist confirmed that it was something that should close up within a few months. At every appt at the pedi's office I always have them listen for it. By his 3 month visit the doctor said that she didn't hear it anymore, and no one else has heard it since then. Until LO's 9 month check up. The doctor thinks that she only reason she heard it now was because LO was up set/excited when she listened to his heart. When I expressed my concern and confusion (did every other doctor miss it? can it only be heard under the right conditions?) she said that if it was still there at his 1 year then we should go to a specialist. Since this visit, I've been trying not to let LO get too up set before I quiet him down (no CIO attempts).

So I've been back and forth on if I should wait until November. By then it will be the holidays and I can only imagine how long I might have to wait to get an appt.

WWYD?

Re: Would you get a 2nd opinion?

  • I would get a second opinion. If you are uncomfortable then you should do something about it.
  • I would go to a pediatric cardiologist with him.  My niece had the same issue and the pediatrician at the hospital when she was born warned my SIL that if she didn't follow up with a specialist to confirm that it had closed that it could affect my niece's ability to get health insurance since it is sometimes considered a pre-existing condition.  Apparently an EKG or Echocardiogram are the only ways to be sure that it's closed.  HTH!

  • Yes, I would get a second opinion.  I'm a "better safe than sorry" kind of person.

  • Yes, I would get a 2nd opinion.  But you obviously have concerns or you wouldn't be posting about it.  Trust your instinct, find a pediatric cardiologist and get him checked out.

  • Definitely get  second opinion.  Especially if you need to get a referral for a cardiologist.

  • Thanks for your advice Ladies! I went ahead and made an appt for next Thursday. This pediatric cardiologist's office was the same one that did his U/S in the hospital so they already have his record. The receptionist made it sound like it is normal to have a follow up (even without our pedi's refferal which we don't need with our insurance).

Hopefull I'll get some peace of mind soon!
