Its for baby to sleep next to you on the outside of the bed. It was attached to the bed between the box spring and the matress. I saw this item at someone babyshower in 2000 lol TIA Ladies

I believe you are talking about a co-sleeper! They make ones that either attach to the bed like your described or sit on the bed in between the parents.
