It can be because when they get upset and cry they suck in large amounts of air. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done if you cannot prevent the crying, which sometimes just can't happen. Believe me I know I am a Mom of twins and sometimes one of them just has to cry if I need to be doing something one on one with the other. I try to keep the crying spurts to a minimum if possible to help keep the gas under control. I used the paci a lot to help with the really worked up crying so they would not swallow so much air when they were really small. Now at 3 months they don't seem to have a problem with the gas as much, so I have been able to back off the paci unless they really need it to calm down.
