1st Trimester

Not doing so well this time around

Ugh! My other two pregnancies went by without a hitch, no symptoms at all. This time around I'm getting nauseous at the most random times, although it is mostly while in the car. I asked the MW that will be my MW in about a month(I'm moving in a month and not getting prenatal care until I get there with her) about it and she said to have it checked out. Other than the nausea everything has been fine, and I really don't want any ultrasounds. Could I go to a GP, or would the GP make me see an OB who of course would most likely require an U/S?

  • Not at all. I don't feel like they have been proven safe, and I know they are not very effective in whatever they are supposed to tell you. Many things have been left undiagnosed that should be able to be diagnosed by ultrasound, and just as many things have been misdiagnosed that the mother and/or baby ended up in harms way because of the misdiagnosis. Why subject yourself to something that could possibly be dangerous while also not effective at its purpose?

  • I think they've been proven pretty safe since most pregnant women receive multiple U/S with no issue and give birth to healthy babies....but I don't think being nauseous at 6 weeks pregnant is something to worry about. Sounds like morning sickness to me.

  • I'm not really sure what you are asking specifically.. ultrasounds and dopplers use non ionizing radiation and i don't see how having one would put you at risk. Sure misdiagnosis takes place in both directions but that goes hand in hand with anything medical in life.

That been said I am not here to talk you into having an u/s that is completely unnecessary for what sounds like morning sickness. However; if you did see a gp and they could detect a hb via u/s would that ease your mind? your other alternative would be to get blood work to ensure your levels are rising appropriately, this may also give you peace of mind.

I hear ya on the sickness though I don't remember feeling this bad with my first.. boo

  • I don't see how nausea would require an u/s.  I'm assuming you don't want to be put on medication for nausea, or maybe you do.  If you don't want medication, there's really nothing you can do but deal with it.  If you want something for the nausea, then your midwife should give you something.  What exactly does she want you to be checked for?

I had the same question. My nausea has been so much worse with this pregnancy, also #3. My doc says my progesterone levels are pretty high, which is great for baby, not so fun in the nausea department. I guess if you weren't able to stay hydrated or nourished at all, there would be cause for concern, but it doesn't sound like that's the case. Good luck!

  • not all pregnancies are created equal so (as the majority of people have) it is possible you could be going through m/s. if you are really concerned you will most likely need to see an ob, unless you have a primary doctor who has ob experience.

also, i would love to know where you have read evidence of ultrasounds being unsafe. if you have the link/book could you please share with us?

  • It sounds like you are experiencing occasional nausea, which is pretty typical in pregnancy. Every pregnancy is different so just because you didn't have M/S before doesn't mean you won't now.

It doesn't appear as though you're having excessive vomiting or are unable to keep fluids down, so I am not sure why you'd need medical care.

  • I didn't have any sickness with my son...this pregnancy I'm neauseas all the time and getting sick daily...my doc said to just hang in there till I'm out of first tri....did you ever have any ultrasounds with your other 2 pregnancys? I don't think I have ever heard of anyone not wanting one to see there baby...to each is own....but as for being unsafe...I don't think that's the case at all...women get them every day...

  • As someone who almost lost my DD to IUGR (a condition with absolutely no external symptoms), I sincerely wish you a healthy pregnancy free of any conditions that would be caught by ultrasound and treated.

  • To each their own if you don't want an ultrasound.. But with my first pregnancy my son was diagnosed with hydronephrosis of the kidney's at my 20 week ultrasound.. If I hadnt had it done I wouldn't have known and he would have gotten really sick.. He has now had 3 different surgeries and is perfectly healthy.. I thank God for that ultrasound..To me technology is a wonderful thing and in my case was a life savor for us..

  • I'm confused. you are concerned b/c you are nauseous? just b/c you weren't with your first two pregnancies? nausea is a very common pregnancy symptom. I'm also on my 3rd pregnancy and I am very nauseous. I had it with #1 but not with #2. all pregnancies are 100% different.

    also, the u/s thing? IJC.
