swaddling?

I just read in a post on the September 2012 board, that they no longer recommend swaddling for newborns as it increases the chance of SIDS.  I haven't heard this, and I don't know what about swaddling increases the risk of SIDS.

For those of you who have taken recent baby classes, are they still encouraging swaddling?  it was a lifesaver with DD.  Otherwise she'd wake herself up, or scare herself every time her arms moved!

Re: swaddling?

  • I have never heard of this. I took my classes and they recommended swaddling to us except for when you are breastfeeding.

  • Haven't heard that either! It was also a lifesaver for us with DS since he would do the same thing scaring himself with his spastic arm/leg movements.

  • My sister just had a baby three months ago and the hospital kept the baby swaddled and encouraged swaddling at home.

We never really swaddled DD as she wasn't a fan but I'd hate to not have it as a resource. Who knows what this little girl will like.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • I was told to swaddle in my birthing class - however - this article may bring to light the confusion:

THe tips at the bottom to me indicate - when done correctly and not blocking the mouth, and perhaps stopping at 3 months (most stop around 3-4 from what I've heard) - its safe and fine and good...

  • My DH was iffy about swaddling so I looked up some studies to ease his mind. Everything I read said that swaddling decreased the risk of SIDS.

  • The daycare that our LO will go to will not under any circumstances swaddle a baby. I asked why because I too thought it was recommended and they said the State of Texas no longer legally allows them to swaddle a baby because it increases the risk of SIDS. I plan to ask our pediatrician about this and see what he thinks but if we swaddle our LO I will probably stop sometime after 8 weeks to get him ready to sleep at daycare.

  • Weird. I've never heard of this, and a quick google search told me swaddling is good for SIDS prevention.

  • We followed the happiest baby on the block and swaddled...but from a friends sister who just gave birth, apparently the hospital now swaddles with the baby's arms out...which sounds like it defeats the purpose...but my DH and I swear that swaddling is what had our DD sleep 5 hours straight by 5 weeks...so thinking we'll plan to again.
  • Never heard of this.

  • I've never heard this, but when we went on our hospital tour a couple weeks ago we were told that it's a good idea to buy the Halo Sleep Sack. The sack itself is like a wearable blanket and there is a way to "swaddle" the baby. The nurse told us that hospitals were starting to use these because they were proven to decrease the risk of SIDS. She brought up some really good points and my FI is all for it as his niece passed away due to SIDS last summer.
