Will not drink milk. Help!!

My lo's had BM exclusively for 7-8 months then switched to half BM half formula and eventually to straight formula with no issues. We are trying to get rid of bottles and are down to just a bottle in the morning when they wake up and one before bed.

I've been trying to get them to drink milk out of a sippy for about a month now with no luck. They will not drink it and just throw the cup or completely ignore it. The pedi said not to put milk in their bottles as to not associate milk with bottles but for the past week or so I've been mixing 2 oz of milk with 4 oz of formula in the am bottle and they are drinking it fine. (They love water in sippys too, but won't drink juice either)

I'm at a loss on how to get them to drink milk. How did you get your lo's to drink it? They are getting plenty of calcium through cheese and yogurt.

Sorry for rambling, any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Re: Will not drink milk. Help!!

  • My neighbor had this problem.  What ended up working for her was getting straw sippy cups for the milk (water/juice was in regular sippys) and putting ice cubes in it, they loved to hear them clink around.  She made milk ice cubes.

Some stuff she tried: serving warm milk, room temp. milk, different sippy cups than what they used for juice, soft top, hard top, open cups (while sitting only).

She picked something, say a new sippy, and tried everything.  One day it was room temp., the next day in the same cup it was warm, then with ice, etc. until she found the magic one that worked for her kids.

Good Luck!  I hope you find the answer soon.

  • Honestly I wouldn't worry about it this early. Give them milk in a bottle and just keep trying with a sippy cup. DS1 wasn't off the bottle until about 15 months and I personally am fine with that. Try giving them two bottles of milk and the rest in a sippy. Eventually they'll get used to the sippy. GL!

  • My pedi said a bottle until 18 mos was fine.  I would like DD to be off the bottle sooner than later, but am taking my time.  It took 2 weeks to transition the bottle from formula/BM to 100% WCM (half and half, then more and more WCM).  For the WCM, I have to take the chill off.  In the meantime, I offer LO a shot glass half filled with milk; she dips her food in it and sucks the WCM from that and on occasion she'll pick up the glass and drink from it with some success.  She won't touch the large open cup at all and I won't offer WCM in her sippy cup (my choice - it's for water).  GL!

  • I'm having the same problem with dd.  She will only drink milk from the bottle.  My pediatrician wanted her off the bottle after she reached a year and we just went for her 16 month check up and she told me I really needed to transition.  We can't get her to drink milk from sippy cups or those straw kind.  We did notice that she eats more food, though!
