My favorite (but not really as formal as some designer jeans can get) are Joe's Jeans. These are the ones I love...and *relatively* speaking they are not that expensive.
Those Joe's look great, for very tall skinny gals! I am petite (5'2) with a smaller waist and thicker on the bottom: ) I definitely want something with a a lot of suck in stretch!

7's are my fave but I've heard great things about J brand. Haven't tried them yet though. I have one pair on Citizens that I love and am just okay with Paige. Paige just doesn't fit me well.
I think you should go to a place like Nordstrom/Neimans/Saks that has a bunch of different brands and styles and try a bunch on. Different brands look good/bad on different body types. I have a pair of J Brand skinny jeans that I love, a pair of Rock & Republic flares that I love but are super low rise, and my everyday jeans are the Citizens bootcuts. Friends of mine have and look great in Sevens and Hudson.
That's like asking a bunch of random people, "what's the best ice cream flavor for me to try?".
There's no way to know whether a brand that works for one person will work for you, you know? You def. have to hit Nordy's or National Jean Company (not sure if they have those around you- some place like that, though, where you can try lots of different brands and talk to someone who knows the different cuts inside out.)
(that being said, I'm 5'8", on the narrow side, and my current jeans of choice are 7's, COH, and Hudson.)

$160 for jeans is b*tchin' expensive to me.
