The hospital I delivered at is 100% pro breastfeeding. That being said, they gave ds a soothie in the hospital because the nurse walked in on me one night sobbing while "nursing". ds was using me as a human pacifier and my nipples were in so much pain. I literally thought my nipples would be gone before I left the hospital. Using the paci was the best thing we ever did.

I don't think pacis are evil or anything to feel guilty about using. But if you'd rather not use one, you could try letting baby suck a finger (daddy's fingers are perfect ;-) instead. Both of my kids did this briefly as newborns and grew out of the need in a few weeks so we never needed a paci.
The pacifier has saved my sanity. We've been using since day 3, since LO is a major comfort sucker. If I didn't use one, I'm pretty sure he would stuck to my boob most of the day. And my nipples would probably fall off.

This! I've bought so many different types and she isn't interested in any of them...only my poor nipples.
How old is he?
This is really not something to get worked up or feel guilty about.
