Freaking out, had a medical procedure before I knew I was KU

I am hoping someone can ease my mind.  I had a procedure done on Tuesday to remove a cyst from my finger.  They had asked me over and over again if I was pregnant, and I told them most likely I wasn't as I had taken a test that morning and it was negative.  I had propofol and was not under general anesthesia, but just above that.  I also had two vicodins.

Now fast forward to today, and I just got a BFP.  I am freaking out that the drugs could have harmed the fetus.  I spoke to a nurse at the OB and she eased my mind a little bit, but not really.  I have an appt with the OB next week.

Looking to see if anyone has had any similar experiences.  I am about 4 weeks along.  TIA.

  • The most important thing to remember is that what's done is done.  You can't go back so don't ruin your days with things you can't change.  That said, if you got a negative that morning, chances are your body was JUST implanting or possibly hadn't even started yet.  It typically takes a couple of days from implantation to produce hormones that will be detected on the HPT.

  • If you got a negative that morning then I would think that you are fine. But I am not a Doctor, hopefully yours can give you some reassurance based on their knowledge of meds etc..

A friend of mine came of depo and was told she likely wouldn't get a period or be able to conceive for months even into a year. She had a back issue requiring possibly surgery in the meantime she had several xrays and was on similar medication such as vicodin for pain. This was a few weeks then she found out she was pg. She has a healthy girl. I do remember her saying she was devastated that all of this would affect the baby.

  • You don't share a blood supply with baby until a few weeks from now, so the chances of the meds doing any harm are slim, if not impossible.  Even if something does go wrong from here on out, I would not relate it to the meds, because you are so, so early in your pregnancy, and the procedure was done before baby had even finished implanting.

It's basically the same thought process as those that "drink 'til it's pink," the alcohol they consume in the days leading up to a BFP will have absolutely no affect on baby.

FYI you never share a blood supply with your baby so please don't let that worry you, ever! If you did mothers with blood conditions would automatically pass them to the child and this DOES NOT HAPPEN. Also, some babies are born with a different blood type them mom.

Try to relax, put your feet up, and drink lots of water to help flush your system. I'm no dr but I doubt this will effect baby based on it being before your BFP. GL and welcome!!

    Edited for spelling... sorry.

  • Thanks guys!  I actually called the hand surgeon's office and they put my mind at ease.  Apparently propofol is a category B drug and is given to pregnant women sometimes.  The nurse basically said the same thing as you guys, that it was probably too early for it to make an impact.  Thanks again!
