Contacts or Glasses?

Wondering what I should do during labor? What did you do?

I'm afraid of getting UBER hot and then I HATE having glasses on my face, but I'm blind as a bat without one or the other. Also concerned about being in labor for an ungodly amount of time and having my contacts dry out my eyes....

So, what did you/will you do? Wear contacts, glasses or neither?

Re: Contacts or Glasses?

  • I wore contacts while in labor with DD1. I also wore them through my RCS with DD2. I will wear them again with my RCS on Tuesday. I was told to bring my lens case just in case they need me to take them out. I would not have wanted to mess with glasses while in labor.

  • I have night and day contacts I can wear all the time. I wore these during my 12 hour labor with DS.  I despise wearing glasses, and definitely didn't want my first pics with LO to have glasses on.

I will do the same with this LO.  putting a fresh pair in this weekend and they last a few months (I typically take them out at night, but *can* wear them once in a while at night if I want)

bring both, you never know what you are going to want to do!

  • I wore my contacts but had my glasses in the hospital bag as back ups.  Plus an extra pair of contacts.

  • I wore contacts because 2 1/2 years ago, I hated my glasses.  I also blind without them, so I needed something.

I went to hospital around 2-3am and delivered @ 4:30pm, so it wasn't that long in my contacts and they never bothered me.  I'm guessing I kept them in until night-time too.

This time, I also plan on wearing contacts during labor and will probably wear my glasses for the rest of the stay so it's easy to take them on and off when I need to get some sleep.

  • I'm more comfortable in contacts, so I'll probably where them.  But I have solution and a case packed, and will bring my glasses just in case I change my mind.  I think wear whatever you're more comfortable in and but bring the other as backup.

  • I would bring some simple saline eye solution to keep your eyes moist during the labor. I'm lucky enough that I wear daily contacts, so if mine get funky I'll just pull them out and pop another pair back in..

*and yes I am confident I can do this in the midst of labor because I've managed to do it several times in a very very inebriated state...don't judge*

  • I wore my contacts for L&D. I brought my glasses, though, & wore them for nighttime feedings.

  • For DS, I wore glasses since we showed up in L&D at 3 am. Ended up with a csection and at my hospital they require no contacts for surgery.

  • I think I labored fairly blind since I woke up at 2 am in active labor (at the hospital, so my contacts were there).

I hate the pics of me with my glasses on from the day(s) following, so I will be sure to put my contacts in at some point if I don't have them in during labor.

I asked this in my child birth class. The nurse told me that they prefer to not have contacts in if you need a c-section. I put on my birth wishes to leave my contacts in. Turns out since my water broke at 4am, I never put my contacts in. I just wore my glasses. I did wear my contacts in pp every day.

This pregnancy I stopped wearing my contacts because I stopped using my prescription eye drops (no tests have been done during pregnancy so I just decided not to use them). So, I will be in glasses once again. I will bring a pair of contacts to the hospital for pp again.

This is what I'm planning on doing.

  • I take my contacts out every night and put them in every morning, so whether I go in with them will depend on what time it is.  If I go in with them, I'll leave them in until I go to sleep or they start to bother me.  If I go in the middle of the night, I'll go wearing my glasses.

Either way, I will have the other packed, and will put my contacts in postpartum if I had glasses on up to that point.  My glasses bother me and I feel like I can see better with my contacts.

  • I'm blind as a bat so I need one or the other, but for me it depends on when I go to the hospital.  If I have my contacts in, then I'll wear those and vice versa with my glasses.  I'm planning on bringing both to the hospital.  I absolutely despise taking a nap or resting in my contacts so if my labor is long then I'm sure I'll switch to my glasses at some point.

  • I WISH I could be wearing my contacts!! My eyes have done some weird shiz since I got pregnant. My contacts don't fit correctly and it feels like there's big rips in them (there's not). So I've been forced to wear my glasses for the past 8 months. Boo.

  • Thankfully my prescription isn't too bad: negative 2, so I'll labor glasses and contacts free. I'll bring both my contacts for visitors and my glasses for watching tv, but will go most the time in a natural state.

  • I wore my contacts for my first two labors and they didnt bother me or get dry at all.  I was told to take them out for my RCS last time and I did, and could barely see anything because i'm blind as a bat.  Then they gave them back to me in recovery and I could finally see again.  I wish I didnt have to take my glasses off this time, its not like they are in the way, you know?  But I will have to, again. I dont have any contacts because I needed new ones.
