So IKEA toddler beds don't take crib mattresses.

Who would have known?  Ugh.  We are at the quickest trip 3-4 hours away from the nearest IKEA.  Anyone have an IKEA toddler bed (we bought the Sundvik bed) that was too long for a crib mattress but didn't buy an IKEA mattress?  I'm wondering if there are any other mattresses that I could buy locally to fit the bed.

  • Wow, that sounds so annoying.  Maybe try calling your local BRU and ask them if they carry that size?  Presumably they've dealt with this before.

Oooh good call!  The most frustrating part of it is that we have two crib mattresses, which we thought one would work for the toddler bed.  Ugh.

  • That sucks.  Can you just stuff the empty space with stuffed animals at the foot of the bed until you find a mattress?

Probably not.  The size difference is almost (or more than ) a foot long.  I'm trying to look on the bright side and be thankful that it will last DS longer than I thought because he won't age out of it height wise as quickly, but I wasn't planning on buying another mattress.

I was going to ask what the difference in length was.  Maybe there's some temporary work-around you can devise?  Even just a board there or something?

  • Well, shoot, I just realized that means I will have to buy more sheets as well....

  • I have a crystal ball that predicts a trip to Ikea in your near future. Dude, I totally knew that their beds take only Ikea mattresses. I have two white Minnen beds for e and k in white. The good news is that fully extended they fit any twin mattresses. The bad news is that I have two full sets of the toddler mattresses and unopened sheets sets that you could totally have if we lived close.

That sounds super obnoxious. Is there a good reason for them doing this other than to sell you a new mattress?

They are an European Furniture Company that sells the standard sized furniture of Europe.

Yep.  Plus, I do not mean this is a snarky way at all, but why did't you measure your bed and the mattress to make sure they'd fit?

  • Can you return the bed and get a different one? Saves you from having to get new mattress and sheets.

  • Does it extend to a twin size? Just get a twin mattress.

This is a really helpful question after the fact. I'm sure the OP hasn't stopped to ponder this for even a second!

Lol it's cool. I didn't even think about it before. We're making the curtains and a quilt for the room as well as bunting flags, so I was more focused on making sure those things were right. We have to travel out of state as well to get to an ikea, and I don't know anyone who has had a toddler bed of theirs. Sadly this bed will not take a twin, it is a weird in between size. I'm going to call bru today and maybe bbb but if they don't have anything that will fit, I may just leave h and DS at home and make the trip myself this weekend.

  • Can you order a new mattress from ikea.com? I know some things you can order online, and some you can't.

I was thinking maybe you could do baskets at the end of the bed to keep books, stuffed animals... I keep some stuff like that at the end DS's crib for him to keep busy in the morning if we wakes early.

Possibly, but doubtful.  On their heavier stuff, the shipping cost is typically more than what the item costs by itself.  We tried to have the bed shipped to us, but the rep said it would have cost over $150 to just ship the frame.  (How in the heck they figured that?  The world may never know...)
