My kid cries when she poops

I don't often get poop diapers, thankfully she reserves them for DC. Last weekend (1.5 wks ago) she kept pointing to her bum and saying something, and I kept checking her diaper and saying "no poop". After like the fourth time there was poop. So I'm like, my kid is a genius! She's telling me she has to poop.

So this weekend she does it once and I ask her if she has to poop and if she wants to go sit on the potty, so we go do that. But she won't sit still on the potty so I let her run around naked and start playing in her room. Then she stands up and she has pooped on the floor! I was surprised and said "You pooped!" and rushed to grab her before she stepped in it, and she started bawling. I got her cleaned up, and she's still crying and does not want to go in her room. I think she thought she was in trouble!

Then last night before bath she wanted to sit on her potty so I took her diaper off and was surprised to see she had pooped and said "oh! you pooped!" and she started bawling again! And bawled the whole time she was in the shower. What's going on? Does she think she's in trouble?

Re: My kid cries when she poops

  • is she being potty trained at daycare? if so, i would ask them how they handle if she has a poop accident. if shes not potty training i would still let them know whats going on at home and see if they have any insight.

eta: i just saw her age so maybe not training yet. it might just scare her to see it. when dd first started pooping int he potty she screamed and wrapped herself around my leg when she saw it. she got over it quickly though.

  • It's possible that she thinks she's in trouble or is upset with herself if she's got a firm grasp of poop goes in the potty chair, not on the floor. That wouldn't explain crying after doing it in the diaper though. :/

Kids are odd, she should have a well check coming up soon right? I might mention it then if it's still happening. It is also possible she just doesn't like to poop.

Whatever is going on, I feel for both of you.

This is kind of funny. Oh kids.

She could be scared to see it. I think she's too young to be upset with herself for not going in the potty (she has never pooped in the potty). I think I startled her, so I'm going to make sure I don't react next time. I don't think they're trying at daycare, but I am planning on asking them about it (the crying thing).

Some kids think that poop is part of their body and they've lost a part of their body. Or something like that. So pooping, and especially seeing poop, is hard for them because they don't understand it's normal. Could that be it?

It could be. I lol'd when TPIS said it, but then I thought of it, and it would be scary to suddenly learn that stuff comes out of you.
