Please help! Anyone have to purchase their own health insurance?

Well, it's a really long story, but basically DH's boss totally screwed us over insurance-wise and no we aren't going to be covered through his work.  I am on maternity leave for this whole year and have the option of purchasing COBRA through my employer, but it's 900/month for family coverage. There is no way that we can afford that for the whole year and going back to work earlier than planned is not an option.  I am a teacher and so my long term sub was given a contract for the whole school year.  So now I am really scared that we are not going to have enough money to keep purchasing the health insurace that we need.  DH is going to start looking for a new job, but I would really like to try to find some cheaper insurance in the meantime.  Can anyone help me out?  I have no idea where to even start - just start calling around to different agencies to get quotes like you would for car insurance?

  • I had to do this when I was self employed after college. A good place to start for quotes was ehealthinsurance.com.

    Good luck!

  • We bought our own insurance for quite some time.  A lot of insurance companies will give you a chart of their rates on their website, so you can start there.  A lot of online applications, too.  I've heard good things about ehealthinsurance.com, too.  It can be a pain filling out those darn applications.  Don't worry, though - it'll all work out! Good luck!
  • we are self employed and have our own health insurance.  Ours is Blue Cross Blue Shield Individual (family coverage) and we love it.

  • We are facing the same issue. Look into getting Chip for DC. (through your state, but your income has to be low enough) I got a quote from Blue Cross for different packages. Like you, COBRA is too expensive for us. Another alternative is to go to your state health hospital, health unit, etc. This may not be ideal, but no out of pocket expense.
