"How do you feel PP" Question

I'm a PhD student and a planner.  I'm trying to tentatively figure out how many classes I'll have to miss once LO is here.  Taking this semester off was not an option because I'm on a grant that pays my living expenses.  I have class one night a week from 4:00-9:30pm and live ~45minutes to an hour from campus.  It makes for a long night.  DH will be home with LO so childcare isn't an issue.

I was hoping to only miss 2 weeks of class.  How do you ladies who are 2 weeks PP feel?  Could you sit through class for 5 hours?  I know there's a difference between a vaginal delivery and c/s so would love both viewpoints just in case.

Re: "How do you feel PP" Question

  • DD is a month old and I start my MA program tomorrow. I will have classes 2 days a week for 3 hours.

I had a c/s and feel good. Every so often my abdomen gets sore. I assume from the nerves fusing back together. I am more worried about my boobs getting engorged since I am EBF my LO. I would say that I could have physically sat through class at 2 weeks PP but emotionally it would have been hard to leave DD.

  • I felt basically back to "normal " just a few days after my vaginal delivery. I would have had no problem sitting through a class 2 weeks out.
  • I am almost 1 week PP and if I were to have a class right now the hardest part would be sitting. Your stitches make sitting very uncomfortable (a boppy helps though) and also if you are nursing your chest is going to be huge and make your back hurt. If you have to do the class you could probably do it just take some pain meds before and drink plenty of water.

  • With DS my stitches were a bit more swollen and itchy than this time around. But tomorrow will be two weeks since I had Addy and honestly I could sit through a class no problem. I think the hardest part would be to be away from my kids haha!

    Good luck!

  • I had a vaginal delivery and I believe I could have easily sat through a class at two weeks.

  • Vaginal delivery - 2nd degree tear - formula feeding. I could sit through the class without pain - I feel really good in that sense and I know in those longer classes they take breaks (and often you can step out if needed).

With my first pregnancy I was taking stool softners and had the worst bladder control (most likely due to having an epidural for a very long time - 18 hrs) - I couldn't go far from the bathroom!

This pregnancy though, I feel better but I am exhausted. I don't know if I could stay awake during the class (especially if it was boring!) But I am home, doing all night feedings (3-4 and he's up 30-90 minutes each time), I don't nap during the day because of DD, plus a short maternity leave, a lot I want to get done plus starting to prepare for the baptism.

  • I guess I might be in the minority here, but I'd say it depends on seating. I had a vaginal delivery and 2nd degree tear and I felt fine for the most part at 2 weeks, but I went to church and after sitting on a wooden pew for an hour and 1/2 I was hurting a little bit again. 5 hours on that would've gotten miserable I think, but with any kind of padded seat I think it would be fine. Like others said, your boobs might get sore as well since that's a long time to go without feeding if you're bf-ing.

  • Thank you, Ladies!  I love the honesty and tips.  I think bringing a Boppy to sit on, staying hydrated, and taking a pain reliever are a great idea.  I hadn't thought about the hardness of the seats.  I'm excited to fit in the desks, though.  Last week, I had to keep the desk part folded up because it squeezed my belly.  That's the first time I felt huge.

I do expect it to be emotional to leave LO and hard on the boobs.  I plan on wearing a very padded bra, extra padding, and bringing a hoodie to avoid the embarrassment of leaking.  My doctor and I are still not sure if I'll be able to breast feed so by then it may not be an issue.  As of right now, the plan is to formula feed.

So far, it seems I'll make it to class this week but I've already got my assignments ready to email to my professors and will start on the next week to get slightly ahead tomorrow.  I need to stay on their good side :)

  • Depends on delivery... I have given birth vaginally 4x and everytime if is different. This time I'm feeling great every day after ... Wishing for an easy / speedy recovery for u

  • i had a vaginal delivery with a first degree tear. physically, i feel fine two weeks pp. im not bleeding that heavily anymore, even with increased activity, and im pretty sure my stitched have dissolved. now mentally is another story...i don't think i'd be able to sit through a five hour lecture after being up all night and day with lo. but if your husband is going to be home to help, and will be home the entire day so that you can rest before class, then id say you'd be okay.

DH has to work during the day so it will just be me during the day.  He plans on doing more night feedings on Monday night so I can sleep in longer stretches (plans being the key word) and get a little more rest before class.  That is my biggest worry right now.  My classes are a research course and a grant writing course.  I am worried about having the energy to make it through the content of both awake.  I have 30-45 minutes between classes so I may try to sneak in a nap between classes in the graduate lounge.

  • Physically and emotionally 2 weeks PP I'm great ... But with DS not sleeping at night I would be too exhausted to sit through class. On a different note wtg on working in your PhD! I finished my masters 2 weeks before DS arrived. I thought about getting my PhD but I need a break from school.

Wearing a padded bra will probably make your boobs more engorged. Whenever I wear anything tighter on my chest or with any padding my boobs hurt so bad and get engorged. Loose fitting clothing and stretchy, sports bras are the best for me. Also, there are nipple covers you can wear that collect your leaked milk rather than having it leak in a pad. Oh and I had a c-section and I felt back to my normal self about a week to 10 days PP. I'm now 2.5 weeks PP and I feel wonderful! I could definitely sit through a class.

Thanks, Manda :)  I had originally planned on waiting a little bit after finishing my masters to go back for my PhD.  I just couldn't turn down the fellowship offer - so no break for me!  On the bright side, I'll be completely finished with school by 32 instead of when I'm "old".  Truthfully, I probably wouldn't have gone back at all if I'd taken a break.

Thanks for the link!  I wasn't sure what would work best for leakage.  I'm very small chested (even still) so have just always worn padded bras.  I think I have some stretchy sports/shelf bras somewhere in my drawers.
