Feelings hurt....kinda long

So, I have had a very difficult time deciding on a middle name for LO. When I first announced her first name, my mom informed me she had come up with the perfect middle name, which is Grace. We soon ruled Grace out because it was just too common for our taste (No offense to anyone that names their LO this, just not our taste). We were soon narrowed down to Elise or Paige, her first name is Kenna btw. Paige, because we liked the sound of it and Elise because it is a combo of the letters in our middle names and a version of my middle name, which is Elizabeth.

Fast forward, a couple weeks ago I decided on Elise, but told DH not to announce it to anyone because I wasn't ready to 100% commit to it. Well my mom has been pressuring me to pick a middle name for her and I have been feeling more confident in my choice as time went on, so I told her I had picked Elise, but hadn't told anyone yet because I wasn't ready to commit. She goes into how I needed to choose what majority thought (which was Grace) and how i need to think about her graduating and her wedding and how that name will sound then !! It honestly hurt quite a bit, because I put A LOT of thought into a middle name for her that wasn't trendy, but wasn't common and had some meaning behind it. She continues to tell me that Grace means "Gift from God", the irony ?? My mom has never taken me or been to church a day in our lives, so why she is suddenly throwing religion at me is beyond me. I just wasn't expecting my mother to be a pushy biotch about it. I told her that she had already gotten to name a child, so she needed to get off my back and needless to say, I am still pissed. Why does everyone think they are entitled to an opinion ??

  • I'm sorry, that does suck.  Try to brush it off.  If you and your H like it, that is all that matters.

  • I'm sorry she's being rude. I think this is why a lot of people decide not to share. If LO was a girl we would have chosen Elyse or Elise for a mn. I love it :]

  • That blows, I'm sorry:( This is why from  here on out, I'll refrain from telling anyone the name we've picked out. My family hates the name we've chosen for DD, and they tell me all about it every time I see them, and then they suggest other names instead. But, we're naming her what we've picked anyway, and you should do the same! If your mother thought Grace was such a fabulous mn, why didn't she give it to you? She had her turn naming kids, now it's yours. Enjoy it, and go with what both you and YH love.

Btw...I love the name Elise. It's been one of my faves for years, but DH doesn't like it, so we'll never use it. *Sigh!*

  • Eh, someone is going to have an opinion about any name you choose! Once dd is here, your mom won't think twice about not liking her middle name.

  • That's frustrating! My mom was similar with my first baby. She didn't like the girl.name we had picked, so she would call me every day with a list of names she liked. I finally had to tell her that if she wanted to name a baby, she was going to have to have her own.

  • i dont know why ppl think they have the right to tell you what to name your child. but i have gotten it from my mother as well. though I am use to my mother telling me what to do or what she thinks i am doing wrong. Personally I like Elise.

  • Thanks guys ! In all honesty, she gets it from her mom. My grandmother is one of the most overbearing and pushy people I know. As a matter of fact, when I was about 5 months along, she informed me that I needed to name her what my mom likes. Now for the record, nobody stands up to my grandmother, so I looked at her and informed her that my mom had already gotten to name a child and it was now my turn. She asked me what child my mom got to name...hello !!! ME !!

Thanks for the support guys ! I really am starting to love the name. I really liked Elizabeth, but hubby vetoed it because of an ex girlfriend that we are both still friends with (she introduced us), so this is our compromise and I love that it actually means something to us and it isn't just a random name that we liked.

  • I LOVE Elise, it's my 2yr old daughter's middle name and it's awesome!  Stick with it, once she's born, no one will be able to imagine her being named anything else!

I love your LO's name!  My name is Arielle.  (I was teased about the Little Mermaid a lot though. Wink)

OP: Don't worry about what she thinks. I sounds to me that she just wanted you to pick out the name she wanted and would scorn any name that you picked that wasn't Grace.  If you and DH like it, then that's the end of it.

And Elise is a beautiful name so she can just stick it...

  • personally i love both middle names lol (my DD name will be paige allyse & allyse is my middle name but i love how you spelled it)

as long as you and your H love the name that is all that matters.  kenna elise flows and i think its a good name for her whole life, including all major events.

everyone is entitled to their opinion, but my philosophy is i'll voice my opinion once, let you know how i feel, then leave it alone.  i figure the listener will do with my opinion what they want.  not all of our family loved paige at first but now theyve gotten used to it and love it.

im sorry your mom isnt being more sensitive to your feelings, but i think you picked a wonderful name.

Yeah, I'm figuring she'll get a few LM comments. But I'm okay with that. Being teased about being a Disney princess isn't so bad, right? lol

Not at all.  It's actually really easy to say "Arielle. Like the Mermaid," when asked my name for things like reservations.
