1st Trimester

miscarriage?

I started spotting on Monday 5 weeks and had light spotting until Thursday. No cramping or clots, but about midday Thursday I had a bout of heavy bleeding...on a pad, it was about 2 inches long by 1 inches wide. Still no clots. I went to the ER and my HCG levels were in the 1360s. Nothing was seen on the ultrasound, but I was told I had to be 6 weeks before the baby would show up. Any ideas if I did miscarry or not? I go back Wednesday for another US.

Re: miscarriage?

  • Somebody please give me their opinion. It's all I can think about. Not knowing is awful and I don't know what to think. Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • Did you experience any cramping with the bleeding? That is usually an indication of a miscarriage. Many women spot and bleed during the first trimester and have healthy babies. I know its tough to do but try not to worry yourself until you see the doctor next week.

  • No, I didn't have any cramping. A little light cramping, but nothing like most people say you have with it. Its just rough not knowing.

  • I just had a miscarriage at about 6weeks along.I had light spotting all week and the nurse said 40% of women spot during there pregnancy. She said if the blood is bright red with menstrual cramping then u should call the doctor. I didn't have any cramping just a gush of bright red blood and two huge blood clots(size of the palm of my hand) we went in to the Doctor the following morning and there was no longer a heartbeat. I had a D&C Thursday:(  You should call your doctor's emergency line just to be on the safe side. Good luck& I'll say a prayer for u

  • It's impossible to say either way.  Spotting and some bleeding can be totally normal in early pregnancy.  Many women have experienced similar things and go on to have healthy pregnancies.

But on the flip side...it could be a sign of a miscarriage.  I would expect more bleeding than what you describe if it was a complete miscarriage at nearly 6 weeks but sometimes you can bleed on and off for awhile.

The only way to know for sure is to get another u/s this week and maybe bloodwork to see if your hcg has gone up.  At this point you should be able to see something on an u/s.

  • I didn't have any clots even near the size of my palm. Mine were all tiny, like the size of a pen drop more or less. I haven't bled any since then. I had an US done yesterday and it didn't make me bleed, which kind of shocked me. I'll definitely keep you guys posted. The doctor said she wanted to see me after the 6 week mark, which is Monday

  • Wishing you the best with this situation!  My only advice or knowledge is that I had a mc even earlier (just before 5 wks) and I definitely just *knew* that was what happened. It started as spotting, bad backache, then major cramps with heavy bleeding. Hope everything works out,  try to stay busy these next few days to keep your mind off it a bit.

  • No i don't think you miscarried. TRUST ME you will know if you miscarried, i did and it was the worst pain i had ever experienced. Did the Doctor tell you anything?
  • I honestly thought I miscarried. Like you, I had a gush of blood twice an spotting for more days than I care to count. I'm almost 10w and LO is in there with a nice healthy heartbeat.

Best of luck to you and fingers crossed that like me your bleeding was nothing major.

  • I spotted just about every day light pink from the day after BFP until 12-13 weeks, once it even turned bright red. Mine was mostly after bowel movements (maybe TMI) and sex, but also sometimes random. I had a sensitive cervix and the ER doc said a lesion on my cervix but my OB said she didn't see one so I don't know about that. At any rate it could be normal, just wait it out try not to stress although easier said than done.

  • My doctor basically said we don't know anything until I get another US done. She said my hcg levels are a little lower than she'd like, but everywhere else says 1360 for 5w3d is in the right range. Thank you guys so much. Ya'll have definitely calmed my nerves a bit. Its nice to know we aren't alone sometimes.
