1st Trimester

Sonogram question

I went for my first sonogram on Thursday, according to my last period I should have been 8w 3d.  The technician saw the fetal pole but it measured 6w 6d.  Almost a 2 week difference.  She claimed she could hear the heartbeat but all I could hear was mine.  When I said this to her she said well I heard it so your good.  All she did was rush me through the whole thing.  Is it normal to be almost 2 weeks different than what you originally thought?  I don't get to see my dr until Sept 4 and don't know if I will get another sonogram then or not.

Re: Sonogram question

  • i don't think 2 weeks is so crazy.  They don't even change your due date at my doctor's office unless your measuring 1.5 weeks earlier than expected.  So, another half of a week may mean you ovulated late.

  • I almost had an identical experience at my first appt. I thought I was 8 weeks 3 days, but according to the ultrasound I was 6 weeks and 5 days. They had me come back in two weeks later to check growth and everything was fine. Good luck!

  • It is not unusual to be a couple of weeks different. I would however be upset I was rushed through an appt and for her to make a comment about the hb that wouldn't sit well with me... i don't know maybe I am being silly but having been through a m/c I guess I am just a little sensitive. We do pay a lot for these sonograms insurance or not don't you dare rush me! lol

Call your OB before youre next appt and seek some reassurance. They are certain to receive confirmation of the size of baby! :)

  • It is totally possible that you just ovulated late - BUT - I would also take into account when you got your positive pregnancy test. If you had your first positive 4-5 weeks ago, you would have had to have been closer to 8w along at this point. If you just got it sometime in the last 3w, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • It's not unusual if it's possible you ovulated late and weren't as far along as you think.  If you are very sure you are nearly 8.5 weeks, then no, measuring at less than 7 weeks is not normal.  U/S are very accurate that early in pregnancy.  It really depends on if it's possible you are closer to 6-7 weeks pregnanct based on when you got a bfp.
