Might be a stupid question- Dating pregnancy

Just got my BFP yesterday, expecting our first! Something I'm reading conflicting things on is how the dr. estimates how far along you are. For example, I have my first prenatal appointment on Sept. 24th. Does that put me at 9 weeks (last period was July 22nd) or at (almost) 7 weeks (conception was around Aug. 7th). I'm pretty confident on when conception was since I was keeping track of fertile signs, but I know it's never a guarantee, and that's why some drs. will estimate based on your last period. So what I'm really wanting to know is, will we be able to see/hear a heartbeat at that appointment? :-) Thanks for any help!

  • I don't have any information for you, I just came in cause I though you were asking for dating advice for while you pregnant. lol. My confusion, its been a long day.
  • They date pregnancies from your last menstrual period.  The two weeks or so between LMP and conception are calculated into the pregnancy dating.  Your first ultrasound will be more infomrative however, and will likely be used more to date the pregnancy.

You can usually see the heartbeat around 6 wks.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • If your dates are correct I would think that you should be able to hear hb using the doppler at your appt. My Dr just usually goes by LMP unless u/s shows a dramatic difference in measurements.

    Congrats!! :)

  • Doctors go by LMP unless an ultrasound says otherwise.

Even if you know the exact date of conception, docs still usually go by LMP. (Also, you have to add 2 weeks to the date of conception to get the correct dating)

  • I saw a HB at 6 weeks you should be fine, by the time you go best of luck

  • Your LMP is the same date as mine, according to websites if I had a perfect 28 day cycle that would mean conception happened about August 5th, but I have long cycles and charted, so I knew I actually ovulated (and conceived) August 9th.  So either way you'll be about 9 weeks and should be able to hear the heartbeat :)

Doppler = not true. DS's was found on doppler at 12w, they tried @ 10w. DD wasn't found on doppler until 18w and it was still spotty at 23w. I has anterior placentas with both. I don't want your false statement of should to scare anyone.
Sorry no paragraphs, bumping from my phone.

  • Yay! Thank you all! :-)

LOL, I tried to write the title so it didn't sound like I was asking about dating advice during pregnancy, but there's only so much room in the subject line, ya know? :-D

  • What everyone else said, they count from your LMP... I wasn't charting to see exactly when I ovulated, but I have long cycles, so I feel like I'm not as far along as they think I am. I'm having an ultrasound at my first appointment at 10 weeks, and I'm hoping to see a tiny baby!
