Polydactyly?

We went to our A/S today and everything was awesome. The tech said we wouldn't be able to see her breathing yet and low and behold there she was, in and out. And yes, we're Team Pink! Then the tech showed the doctor the images and she came back for more images. The doctor came in a few minutes later and let us know that the baby has a 6th toe on her left foot. Not like a deformity mind you that most people remove, but a 6th, fully-functioning toe, which apparently is very rare. Baby wouldn't show us the bottom of her right foot, so I have to go back in 2 weeks to see if she has 12 or 11 toes! Some friends and family seem concerned and a little freaked out, but me and hubby think this is pretty cool. We asked if there were any long term concerns and the doctor said he would say no, maybe buying wider shoes. In all his 40 plus years of practice, he has never seen a perfectly formed, fully-functioning 6th toe. He seemed highly impressed :)

  • That's kinda cool. But how can they know already if it's fully functioning or not?

  • Believe it or not, by the bone structure (And they're so tiny!). You could clearly see 6 little bones and toes. I'm just educating myself, but the doctor said that if it was more of a deformity, it wouldn't have an individual bone. Usually they fork off another toe or you see a 6th toe but no bone. But there it was with it's own bone. And the ultrasound is cool! She has her big toe and then 5 smaller toes all in size order (another clue it's fully functioning). I'm a little worried if there will be any complications, but so far, everything points to her just being unique.

Cool! Maybe she'll be a swimmer or runner or something.

  • So cool! Not the same, but it's actually fairly common in cats. My parents have a cat that had an extra toe on each front foot. Her name is Poly for that reason =)
  • That's cool! Umm, I kinda want to see the pic. Congrats on finding out you're having a girl!
