It definitely gets firmer as the skin gets stretched but it's never really hard. To me, it always felt like a thick water balloon, which is really what it is.
I remember one of my single friends being surprised when she felt my big baby belly because she expected it to be really hard. I let her push around and try to find the baby and it freaked her out.
So, yes and no. It will get firm and the skin will be tight, but it never gets solid.
I'm kinda of wondering the same thing here. I can feel the top of my uterus and it's well below my belly button and this point. But I have a big bump/bloat but I guess it wouldn't be there if it wasn't for a growing baby. I guess the stomach muscles need to loosen up as it gets ready to stretch for the real big bump!

Your uterus may be higher than you think. I was convinced, as of yesterday, that I was feeling the top of my uterus about two to three inches below my belly button. I went to the doctor today for my 16 week appt and my uterus is actually only an inch lower than my belly button.
