Tell me about baby monitors

I'm looking at baby monitors and not really sure what I really want/need.  We don't have a huge house and I don't really think I need video monitoring but was curious what some good monitors are or what features you think you want?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Tell me about baby monitors

  • We have a video monitor and I have to say, big house or not, it is the BEST purchase we made.

You can check on the baby without going into the room.  DD made alot of noise in her sllep, but if I didn't have the video, I would be running in everytime and potetially waking her up.  All i Have to do is look at the monitor and see she is fine.

Also, as she got older and plyed in her crib abit before falling asleep, I was able to see what she was doing.  I still have it in her room now.  She is in a bg girl bed, so I can see what she is up to in her room.

Also, I can now attach a second camera in for the babies room.  Very Handy.

Ours is the Summer Infant Hand held.

    EVERY WORD OF THIS.

Possibly, the video monitor is my most favorite baby related purchase EVER. We still use it and DD is 3 years old. It's nice to see her playing in her bed, watch her "talking" with her buddies, etc. We don't have a huge house - all rooms on the same level - but I love it. We are getting a second for LO#2.

  • Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights Monitor with Dual Receiver

This is the one we have. Its a Fisher Price lights and sound baby monitor. We have no need/use for the video monitor's so this was a good option for us. Our kids share a room and it right off our living room. you literally have to walk past it no matter which end of the house you are going in.Plus they are heavy/good sleepers, so if we want to peek in on them we just open the door and check on em. They never wake up when we do, we have parties and people over and they will sleep through all the noise (which is great). I guess i see the plus side of the video ones if you have a huge house and its inconvenient to run one end to the other end of the house everytime the baby cries. It all depends on your needs. But for a straight forward monitor, i love this one. Plus the base doubles as a night light.

  • We love our Angelcare AC1100 Video, Sound & Movement monitor. Some people dislike the under-the-mattress sensor pad because of issues with the alarm going off 'falsely' but we've never had that problem once. I really love that DD can hear my voice for soothing without having to go into her room, and that it has colour video that switches to night vision automatically.

This exactly. LOVE LOVE LOVE our video monitor. We still love it because DS has escaped from his crib once already and I like to keep an eye on him until he actually falls asleep. It saved me many nights from getting up when DS was just moving or making noise and not really awake. We'll be getting a second camera for this baby.

  • I don't think I can see discussion on this topic enough...I'm at a complete loss of what kind of monitor to buy. It seems all the reviews have good and bad and I just cannot pull the trigger. I've pretty much passed the task off to my DH so I don't have to stress over it anymore. I'm going to recommend he looks at the Summer Infant monitor as it sounds like there are some personal positive recommendations on here.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • I didn't get a video monitor with DS and it is probably one of my biggest regrets from last time. I for sure getting one this time! I want to get one that you can control where it is looking so I can spy on the kids from all angles :)

I always tell everyone to buy a video monitor!  I was just goig to register for a sound monitor, but after three friends who recently became FTM recommended them I bought it.  BEST PURCHASE EVER!  DD is three and we still use it every night.

Now I do have a question for those STM's, our model of the Summer Video Monitor is not available, are the cameras universal and will they work on other models or do we have to buy another one?

  • Thank you everyone for the helpful input!

  • A video monitor is definitely worth it. I'm able to see DS and what he's doing when I know he's not asleep yet. Pus I can just buy another camera and use it with the same set I have. It's also Summer Infant.

  • We used the angelcare monitor until about a month ago. DD was so mobile that it was going off pretty frequently, however, when she was younger, I wouldn't have traded that security for anything. We got the Levana era video monitor with an extra camera for DD 2. I love watching her on the video monitor. She cracks me up!
