tummy bug help? She didn't wake up after puking :(

Poor thing had lots of diarrhea yesterday, so I'm pretty much 100% sure she has the stomach bug I had Monday. Pedi said fluids - water and pedialyte, milk unless she pukes, blander foods, barrier cream in her diaper. She wouldn't eat dinner last night, probably just half a cracker, 2 sips off a pouch, and a bite of yogurt (totally uncharacteristic for her). She wouldn't take more than a sip of the pedialyte, but she's chugging water.

I put her for bed at 7, and just woke up at 4, because I kept hearing her cough on the monitor. I decided to get her up and give her a drink, worried she was dehydrated. Holy. Crap. Diaper explosion inside her pajamas and some leaked out onto the sheets. Puke. Everywhere. All totally dry, but all over her shirt, sheets, lovey, blanket, everything. She didn't wake up and cry when she puked all over her bed???

I cleaned her up, changed the sheets, put her back to bed. But now I'm scared it's going to happen again and I won't know :( I feel awful, she must have been sleeping in puke and crap for hours.

Anyone had to deal? If she won't take pedialyte, just keep pushing water? Even if she won't eat anything? My bug was uncharacteristic and lasted 3-4 days. Really, really hope it's not the same time for her.

Would love any tips btdt mamas have. Waiting for the laundry rinse to finish so i can run a full wash right now...

  • Haven't btdt, but definitely continue to give water. Do you have any chicken broth or soup she might can drink the liquid from? That might help get some calories in her. I hope she feels better soon.

  • So sorry. DD had one in February, vomitting for two days then diarrhea for a week. She was really sick and tired for probably 4 days. But we had the same, middle of the night Dh went to check her and she was covered in poop.

Just get her to keep drinking, she'll eat when she's ready.

Also DD too would only take a few sips of the pedilite, we kept it handy and offered it often.

    Hope she feels better
  • I haven't btdt with DD yet. I've had a few stomach bugs myself the past few years. They are the worst. I would just keep pushing whatever she'll consume. Since she's drinking water, and not much pedialyte, can you maybe just add a little pedialyte to her water and see if she'll drink some that way?

  • we just lived through this last week. we all had it but DD the worst :(

pedi said to stay with bland but not surprised that she didn't eat more than a cracker. we tried to push bananas and toast and yogurt when she would eat a little tiny bit. pedi also said to cut the milk and dairy (except yogurt!) which in our case seemed to work. as it was explained to me, some of these stomach bugs wipe out the enzymes that break down lactose in the belly causing what is like a temporary lactose intolerance. those enzymes need time to regenerate and after 4 days we re-started milk (yesterday) slowly.

it was a rough bug. DS had it for about 10 days but he is older and handled it better (we cut the milk for him too....).

good luck with the clean up. it was CONSTANT and i cleared through tubs of those clorox wipes.

  • Sorry mama:-( Haven'r had a stomach bug yet. For the pedialyte, make you could freeze some into ice cubes and put in a mesh feeder. The cool-ness might feel good.

  • DS had a stomach bug back in February and it was a mess. Covered in poop and puke. The diarrhea lasted about a week. We mixed Pedialyte with formula and he drank it that way, but now if he wouldn't take it straight, I'd mix it with water or juice. But if she's drinking water that should help keep her hydrated! Good luck!

When K had a stomach bug, she also didn't wake up for it. I heard her coughing on the monitor, so I went into our room and she was covered in vomit. Cleaned her up, changed sheets, and she threw up again about an hour later. Cleaned her up again, and then another hour later all hell broke loose. She was throwing up every 20 min all.night.long. And every time she threw up, she would go right back to sleep. I finally was so tired that I propped myself up in bed with pillows and let DD sleep on my chest. Then when she threw up I cleaned her up as good I could while she was asleep(!) and then I would go back to sleep for 15 min until she threw up again. It was a rough, rough night, so ::hugs:: to you. Stomach bugs SUCK big time.

DD couldn't tolerate pedialyte. If Lexi is drinking water, I would try to add some pedialyte to her water. If she still won't drink it (that stuff is nasty!) then try chicken broth and just keep giving lots of water. Oh, and get probiotics like yesterday. That's what my pedi recommended- that and yogurt. Oh, and bananas and applesauce- the BRAT diet. But if she won't eat that's okay too. As long as she's drinking tons of fluids.

Thanks for the advice. What probiotic do you recommend? She hasn't been wanting to eat yogurt, and I've never given her just a straight probiotic, but that makes sense.

Her poor butt was already in bad shape, this is NOT helping! I've got her in sposies and I swear I put 1/4 cup of aquaphor on it her at every change!

  • Been there...we had B in the ER in March for non-stop projectile puking.  They had to give him a melt-away pill that stopped the nausea.  Within minutes...he stopped puking!  He refused pedialyte, though, and our pedi said to try Gatorade.  He LOVED it!  The electrolytes are just what they need when they've been sick.  Now, everytime DH has a Gatorade, LO gets some sips, too.
