My kid is wild :-( Help!

DD's daycare teacher said that she is very active and she feels sorry for us at home, as well as writing on her daily note that "We ALL sat down and listened to a story."  It is her first week and she is 21 months old.

After seeing her at My Gym tonight, I understand :-( She wants to do her own thing- not interested in circle time. Screaming and making a fit when she had to stay in my lap and participate.  I was worn out!

She is given independence at home to play and do whatever she basically wants as long as its safe and not bothering anyone else.

Am I too soft?  How to I "tame" my child?

Re: My kid is wild :-( Help!

  • We have a two year old play group. Nobody ever sits in a g-d circle for "story time".  We tried and peed laughing bc it was such a failure. Have you ever been to library story time? How many of the actually sit? Not many, at least not around here.

And Im a little offended at her "i feel sorry for you". They are bundles of energy. It's rare I've met a calm 2 year old. Even kids who were previously calm, are all nutsos now. My friend who I was so jealous of bc her kid would sleep and be calm and sit and do one thing for an hour is JUST as crazy as my son.

I think your DC teacher needs a punch to the face

I mean you could try to have your child sit and listen to a story for, say a minute and then let her run around. And after a few days, increase the time by 30 seconds or another minute. But it's not like her behavior is abnormal.  AND IT HAS ONLY BEEN A WEEK.

I still vote for face punching.

  • Does the teacher teach only two year olds or a mix? Because wild and tons o energy basically describes a two year old. My oldest was 2.5 when he started preschool and it took him a few weeks to learn the schedule and sit for circle time. She needs to cut your LO some slack.

  • Echoing what SSM said, have you been to storytime at the library for the under 2 crowd? Half of the children stay seated and that's with at least one adult per child. I think she needs to chill out with her expectations after such a short time.

  • I don't think you need to tame your child. Two year olds are meant to be full of energy. Your child isn't even quite 2 years old. Now, my daughter will sit during circle time, BUT she's been in daycare since she was 12 weeks old and she also LOVES to sing, dance and read which are all circle time activities.

If you would like to begin to encourage your daughter to focus in certain situations, then you do need to practice a bit at home. I would start with just reading to her more. Have her actually sit in your lap while you read. Then, move on to a couple times a day where she sits in your lap and plays with a toy. Eventually maybe work on her just sitting calmly in your lap for 5 minutes or so a couple times a day. But don't worry about circle time right now... It's totally normal for her to not sit for something like that.

She's almost 2. What exactly are you expecting?

And it's her first week in a new environment. She's adjusting. Is the Gym thing new too? So 2 new environments at once?

I think OP is only worried bc her buttmunch DC teacher is acting like this is not normal, which it is.

Which is why I advocate face punching the teacher.

    This!  Esp. the bolded.
  • We had my almost three year old in a I'm Tworiffic class.  He did not participate in the organized activities like story time.  He is in speech therapy through EI and the therapist comes to our house. He tries to do what he's told but sometimes its just too much and he takes a break on his own terms.  She has told me this is very normal.  I wouldn't try to tame your kid.  I think you'd have as much luck trying to herd cats.
  • Seriously, I think it took my kid months and months of daily circle time to stay seated for the period even once.  Still now, he sometimes gets up and runs around and so do the other nearly 2 year olds in his class.  Your kid is just fine, it's the other ones that aren't normal, haha!  Seriously, don't worry about it.  Just give her some more time.  Maybe practice circle time at home sort of like a PP mentioned?
