Multiples

Multiples, Betas, & Ultrasounds

Hi ladies!  I'm posting from first IF (my info is in my siggy) and now PAIF and April Moms 2012.  I go in for my third beta and first ultrasound on Monday, the 27th (Can't wait. Feeling so anxious and nervous).

I'm wondering what your first, second, and third betas were and at what point were you given the news that you were having multiples?  I had 2 blastocysts transferred and my nurse kept reminding me about the chances of having twins. She told me by my 2nd ultrasound, September 4, that we would be able to hear the heartbeat but can they tell on the first ultrasound?  This is so new to me and still a miracle that I am here.  Would love to read your responses.

Re: Multiples, Betas, & Ultrasounds

  • I really do not remember what my betas were.  I know it's different for everyone though.  But I remember looking at some chart online and DH asked where normal was and I pointed it out and then he asked what mine was and I said "um, it's off the charts" and he looked very worried when I told him that could mean more than one baby.

At six weeks we saw two sacs - but could only see a heartbeat in one sac and the RE pointed out that it could be a vanishing twin.  At 8 weeks they confirmed heartbeats in both sacs.

Anxious to start TTC #3 within the next year!

  • You can check out betabase.info to see where your numbers fall. I can't remember my exact betas, just that they were a bit higher than average for a singleton. My first u/s was at 6w and we saw both babies and both heartbeats, but we were warned before the u/s that it was early and we may not see a heartbeat yet. Good luck!

  • Congrats! My beta #1 was 360ish for my first twin pregnancy and 490ish for this pregnancy.

I had an ultrasound around 5 weeks the first time (due to OHSS) and my RE confirmed twins, the second time at 6 weeks. Both times she saw yolk sacs and heartbeats.

     Good luck to you!

  • My betas are in my siggy, but (despite a warning from the nurse) I really didn't think it was multiples, as two of my friends had almost identical betas for their singletons. I second the rec to check out betabase. They've got great charts online. We found out we were expecting twins at our first ultrasound at 6w3d. We saw both sacs and heartbeats at that time.

  • Betas really are not a good way to determine if you are having multiples.  My first beta at 10dp 5dt, was like 420.  Three days later it was over 1200.   I only had 2 beats done.  I had my first u/s at 6w 2d- saw both babies and their heartbeats.  Only then was I sure I was having twins.  I was discharged to my OB then.  I didn't "hear" their heart beats until more like 12 or 13 weeks when a doppler would pick it up.
  • My first beta at 9dp5dt was 452, my second at 11dp5dt was 1,026. My third beta and first u/s were at 5w2d. My beta was 11,750 and we saw two gestational and yolk sacs. My second u/s at 6w2d, we saw both HBs. GL!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • I thought my betas were pretty low. 8dp5dt they were 139 and at 10dp5dt they were 230. Turns out I'm pregnant with triplets!
  • I agree that betas aren't a good indicator--I was pregnant with triplets (lost one in the first tri), and my first beta was "only" 81. My betas did more than double during each 48 hour period, but I'm not sure if that's an indicator either. We saw 2gestational sacs with 3 yolk sacs at my 5 week ultrasound (also due to severe OHSS) and heartbeats at my 7 week.

Congratulations :) I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • I didn't do ART, but the only beta I had was 40, around 11-12 dpo. I saw 2 babies on u/s at 6w 3d.

  • My beta's are in my siggy. They were not at all reflective of multiples. In fact they didn't even double in 48 hours, it took 52-53 hours. Beta numbers are not very reliable to determine multiples.

  • I don't remember my betas exactly but I remember they were always just over the average for twins on the betabase site. We had our 1st u/s b/t 7 and 8 weeks and at that point we saw both babies and heard both heartbeats.

  • I don't know what mine were.  I put back one blast and two morulas - that was all we had after 11 retrieved and 6 fertilizing.  With my first beta, I think it was close to 300 and that was around 9 or 10 days after 5dt.  I went in for my first ultrasound at 6w1d and saw both heartbeats.

    16dpo - 885
    Progesterone - 40.6

We saw 2 sacs and 2 heartbeats at 5w6d.

My betas were actually higher with my singleton...

    Beta 2 at 16dpo 998
    Beta 3 at 28do 43,290

The dpo is based on when I got a positive opk, but I think that I actually must have surged for two days and o'd on the later side of the 24-48 hrs.

I found out we were expecting twins 2 nights ago when we did an emergency visit to the ER.

  • I also had two blastocysts transferred.  My beta #1 was 247 and beta #2 was 490 (2 days apart).  We found out it was twins at my first u/s (6w1d).  We didn't hear heartbeats until a week later.  Good luck!
