Baby Names

Aleksia ... It is spelled correctly :)

Ok, I had to scrub my two first choices Eva & Alaina (compatibility, family names ... Thanks for the help on those two!)

We have a list going that includes more everyday names and spellings (Brenna, Leah and so on) but I like to find more of meaning to a name. Our son is Evan. My husband is Welsh and his middle name is John. Evan is the Welsh equivalent of John ... Get my drift.

So, I am Danish. I looked through a lot of Danish names and a few stood out. Aleksia (pronounced like Alexia), Danika, Laila. I liked the sound of Evan and Aleksia right off.

Curious though what initial reaction is to this spelling. Was the pronunciation obvious immediately?  General opinion?

  • The pronunciation was obvious.  I realize Aleksia is spelled correctly in Danish, which works well if you live in a large Danish community.  Otherwise, I'd go with Danika or Laila.

  • The pronunciation was not evident to me. I had to think about it. At first I thought Aleeskia like Alaska and then I saw how you would pronounce it. I like Laila and even Danika much better.
  • I think Danika and Evan sound great together. I think Aleksia is fine, but for some reason the first thing I correlated with this name was dyslexia.

At first quick glance I thought it was Alaska spelled incorrectly and this was going to be a post about another horribly spelled name.  Once you told me, I get the cultural spelling behind it (DH is Danish), but I'm not sure it will translate here.  And I agree with PP that Evan is more mainstream and the two don't fit well together IMO.  I would go with Danika, Laila, or change the spelling.

  • I immediately pronounced it right, but it also instantly made me think of the medical condition of "alexia." I know a lot of people don't care about that kind of thing see the millions of Addisons tinning around but I'm not a fan.

  • I got the pronounciation, but unless you live in a large Danish community she might have frequent problems with misspellings/pronunciation as she grows up.

Out of the Danish names you listed I LOVE Laila. I also think it sounds great with Evan.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't have a problem pronouncing it. I've seen it before and I like it a whole lot better than Danika. Laila or Aleksia get my vote.

  • I like it. The pronunciation wasn't difficult at all for me. If you like it use it. Since it is of cultural significance I wouldn't change it. I would put more emphasis on culture, but then again I don't like seeing a groups culture get watered down.

I knew how to pronounce it, but I'll tell you that it is not recognized on Behindthename.  I don't know if that matters to you.

I'm on the fence about the name.  I kinda like it and kinda don't.  Aside from that Evan is so mainstream while Aleksia is a bit more out there.  Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I really like Behindthename.com the definitions are clear and the detective work the site owner does to come up with the names history is phenomenal. But it is a work in progress They have recently added several names that were not there before. I wouldn't count a name out based on this site alone.

  • First thought was "how do I say this?" After reading how to pronounce it, I see how it works. My concern is that me having a different name (Shalyn), I know how to pronounce it but it is mispronounced all the time and it gets kind of tiring to correct people all the time. I do really like the name Alexia though! :)

It just doesn't look right to me. I get that it's cultural, but it really doesn't look right to me.

This is what I was thinking. I knew how to pronounce it, but I think people will mistakenly spell it Alexia.

  • I first thought it was Alaska spelled wrong. I think it is a pretty name, but I like the x spelling much better.

  • I pronounced it right in my head. At first I thought it was one of those "creative" names, but the fact that it's Danish makes me really like it.

I completely agree.  Even though it is cultural, it does look like a made-up spelling and most people will assume the spelling Alexia.  FWIW I LOVE Laila.

  • Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Because DD will come across all kinds of people w/ all kinds of opinions I really love seeing what the initial reaction is from people.

The thing that stood out right away is the number of you who mentioned she will have to spell (and re-spell) her name for people her whole life ... that could def. get tiring!

    thnx

  • I like the name.  I understand thats how it is traditionally spelt   but  like some Pp said i had to think about it and didnt really know until you wrote it.  If you go with this name I would spell it Alexia.

I like this name the most of the three

  • Considering the love of traditional, Irish names on this board, I am surprised by all of the comments regarding the spelling/pronunciation of Aleksia.  I am also surprised by the association with dyslexia since the traditional, American spelling, Alexia, is the one which most resembles the word.

As for spelling the name throughout life: I have a traditional name which is spelled traditionally and people misspell it all the time.  I really don't think it's a big deal to correct people.  Aleksia has cultural significance for you; I say go with it!

  • Alexia is a medical condition with which a person loses the ability to read.  I dislike the name because of this.
