Urine Vs. Blood Test

I called my Dr. today and told her that I got a BFP!!! She then said since I got a bfp on a at home test I should come in for a urine test and don?t need to have a blood test done. Is this normal?

Re: Urine Vs. Blood Test

  • I would say so. I had my first apt on monday and they didnt test for anything. they just take your HPT as a positive. I think the reason why so many women here are getting their betas done right away is because of history of loss or fertility treatments. If this is your first pregnancy with no problems, they probably dont see a reason for more proof.

  • The only reason I got a blood test done, and continue to do so, is because of my history of miscarriage. You should be fine :) Congrats!

  • I know the reason I'm having blood tests is because there's a HUGE discrepancy between my FF ovulation due date and my LMP due date, so they have to make sure I actually have a healthy, viable 5 week pregnancy and not a miscarried 12 week pregnancy. Best of luck, and congratulations!

  • When I called my doctor after a HPT came back positive, I was told to have a blood test to confirm.  Every practise is going to do things a little differently.

  • I think every practice is different. When I told my OB that I was expecting, they just set me up with an appointment and had me get my progesterone levels checked. It wasn't until week 5 that I had blood work done to see if my hCG levels were doubling as expected, but that was only because I started to have brown spotting.
  • I'm seven weeks right now, and my doc isn't even seeing me at all until I'm at ten weeks. At this point, I know beyond a doubt that I'm pregnant... And I'm young and healthy with no complications, so my doc wasn't concerned about testing me.

  • Definitely normal. My doctor doesn't even want to do a urine test. Their tests are less sensitive, so if you peed on a stick, you're pregnant in their eyes.
