Just got back from my 40 week appt. To say it was discouraging would be an understatement. I can totally see now why some of you ladies decline cervical checks. I've been getting checked every week since week 35 when I was 0cm and 75% with a very low baby. Now 6 checks later I am a fingertip dilated, -2, and just over 50% effaced. That's right I'm less effaced than I was 5 weeks ago. I can't even give the excuse of different docs checking me, this one checked me before. I just have to know, how the hell do you go from almost 90% at week 38 back down to just over 50%? I've already had to deal with the baby "undropping" and turning diagonal. I just want to cry! I feel like I may be the first women in history to stay pregnant forever! I mean no progress is one thing, I can deal, but going backwards?!?!?! Sorry, just had to let off some steam.

Hang in there! With my first pregnancy, I had NO progress (maybe 1 cm) at all until the night before my due date and I went into labor on my own. DD#1 was born on her due date. I was super frustrated leading up to that point (and the hormones certainly do not help), but it all worked out.  I'm telling myself the same thing this time around (very little progress to date yet)...

Deep breath. That baby WILL come out!!

As with pp - with my #3 child I was 1 cm and not even effaced and went into labour a few days later.  a) your water could break anytime and b)  you could go anytime.  dont be discouraged.  I was 1.5 cm - 2 cm and 50% effaced and a few days later went into labour with #4 so it can happen

This is very encouraging. I am past due and as of my appt on Monday I was 1.5 cm and 50 effaced. I feel like our baby is never going to arrive.

i understand your frustration.  My OB checked me on Friday where i was 4cm, 100% and -2 still.

Sunday i went in when she hadn't made kick counts and the MW said 4cm, 80% and higher somehow... not loving the inconsistency.
