Naming problems...

My ideas about names:  Something a little different and unique.

Husband's ideas about names:  Something normal and 'classic.'

We've agreed upon a name for a girl, but in my opinion, we haven't for a boy.  Husband has had his heart set on 'Christopher' for years and years and years.  I feel like Christopher is so ... normal and overused (nothing against you if you're naming your LO Christopher!).

We had considered 'August' and I thought we had settled on it only for hubby to say he's not sure he likes it.  One day he mentions 'Cameron' for consideration.  When I get a baby name book the other day, he says, 'I thought we were settled on names.'  :/  Uh....help?!

He then confesses to me anything we choose besides 'Christopher' is going to be a distant second for him.  To his credit he follows it up with 'You know I'll love our child no matter what we choose.'   I just want us both to love the name!  Anybody else dealing with this?  How should I go about this?

  • Would he consider Christoper as a middle name?

  • Are you Team Green? If not I wouldnt worry about it until you find out the sex. Maybe, you are having a girl so you dont even need to open that can of worms.

I think that both parents need to like the name. If you dont like his pick, then you need to keep on looking.

I guess I should have shared this as well:  It is tradition in his family for the firstborn boy to have the father's first name as his middle name.  So whatever we name our first boy, it will be ______ Michael.

  • When we were naming DS, DH was set on Jack but I felt like the name was over used and I wanted something different. DH sat down one day with a small baby names books (not one of the huge 500,000 names books) and made a list of about 25 favorites. I then went down and immediately said no to about 3/4. For a few days we both went over the list slowly crossing off names for various reasons until we had 3 left. I chose Levi from those 3.
  • Picking a name is a pain the butt. We have a rule, if either one of us isn't really into a name (no matter how much the other person LOVES it) we veto it. So if you aren't in love with Christopher then that just isn't the right name (IMO).

We narrowed it down to 2 names with my first son (Grayson & Alexander). We didn't pick a name until after he was born. We met him, and without a doubt he was not an Alexander.

So, it's not like you have to have a name right this second. There is plenty of time and you might look at him and think, "Maybe he is a Christopher". Who knows.

We currently have a list of 6 boys names we both like. We have vetoed many many more. It's a long process!

    Good luck

  • Hmmm. I want to say that I totally agree that if possible, you should both be really happy wtih the first name. What are some other names you like just to get a feel for your style?

    A few random thoughts:

-Christopher isnt that common anymore I dont think (Im talking off the top of my head - it seems to me it was pretty popular a generation ago but not as much anymore, but you would have to look at the SS list for sure)

-I would maybe look for a name that is traditional, but has some more offbeat nicknames. Alexander/Xander comes to mind immediately but I am sure there are others like that. That might be a way to merge your naming styles.  Even Christopher could be Topher for a different nn... not as offbeat as August but still (and I will say August is nms but I think Gus is just TOO cute for words)

-Since you dont want something too common, maybe use the soc security list from 2011 as a guide, maybe there are some classic boy names that will appeal to you more if you see that they are fairly far down the list.

DH and I totally have similar naming style, esp for boys (I lean a bit more whimiscal for girls than he does) but we still havent landed on one for #2 (team green). Boo!

I like Toben, Aiden, Troy, Liam (though I know this one is fairly popular now), Zechariah, Trevis, Corey ... Those are some I can think of off the top of my head.

Haha. :)  Aiden is a family name for me ... I think.  Or was it Adrian?  I LOVE the William/Liam combo, but I have a cousin who named their little boy that, so we probably won't go there.  BLAH.  I do like some popular names, I'll admit.  But I don't usually go for things like John, Matthew, David, Robert, Andrew, Stephen ...  I guess I just grew up with too many of those! Haha.

  • I do understand... I probably wouldnt love Christopher either because it was a popular name of our childhood.

Id say print out the SS list and go through it. I actually just did that myself :)

  • I think getting a baby name book is a great idea, it will give YH many more options & I'm sure his mind will change easier once reading other names. Good Luck!

  • I know exactly what you are dealing with, except DH and I are opposite.  I like the "normal and classic" names and he likes the "different and unique" names.  For example, like your husband, for years and years and years he has wanted to name his son after his grandfathers which would be Arthur Robert.  I don't mind the name Robert, but I can't stand the name Arthur and he won't compromise and switch it around.  The reason he is so hell bent on this is because he is named after his dad's grandfathers and he wants to start a tradition.  We are finally at the point where we are discussing other boy names but everything that he semi-likes doesn't compare to Arthur in his mind.  It's a struggle almost everyday.  He isn't as particular about the girls names so that should be somewhat easy.  I guess we will just wait until the a/s to find out the sex and then hash out names afterwards haha.
