People are so rude!!!

DS and I went grocery shopping today. The store was dead and so I got into a line, there was no waiting or anything. This lady was ringing us up. She didn't say hello to us or anything. She didn't ask if I want anything bagged, she just put paid stickers on some of my stuff. Which is ok for certain things but she did that with a box of tissues and a small bag of potatoes. Whatever, I just let her go. After she was done checking us out I grabbed my bags and said "thank you, have a nice day" and all she says is "Next time, remember this line is 12 items or less!". I had 14 items and there was no sign anywhere that said anything about having so many items.

Sorry, I know there's really no point to this post but she really p!ssed me off.

Also, isn't 12 a weird number? Usually they are 15 or 10 items or less...haha.

  • Ugh, I can't stand when they don't even acknowledge you!  Say hello, or something!

  • That is an odd number.  Was she young?  Maybe you can just chalk it up to rude.

I understand though, at our store there are certain cashiers I avoid.  I'd rather wait in a line 5 deep in order to get better customer service then not have to wait and be ignored.

Sounds like she was having a bad day and she took it out on you.  Seriously, who counts the amount of items you are checking out?

It says at the bottom of the receipt how many items you purchased, not sure if she looked at that or just counted every item she scanned.
  • How rude.

And around here you see 10 or 12 items and 20 items.

  • This happens all the time to me!! People are just so rude. It's your job to say hello!!!

I once was in a 15 items or less line, had 16!! The lady told me next time to go to a different line. I said "f you" well in my head I did. Then I went to my car and called her manager.

It just baffles me how disrespectful people are now, no wonder they have self check out, nobody wants to have face to face contact. I totally understand when you have biitchy azzz cashiers and customer service agents.

I may be a biitch for calling to complain, but I feel like its their job to be nice and at least say hello. What gets me is when the dumb azz high school kid pushing carts doesn't say excuse me or anything!!!

I had O at the grocery store and was about toget a cart when this kid walks in front of me and grabs like 5 carts and proceeds to pull them out of the corral while I stood there. He expected me to move, which I would have, had he said excuse me. Jerk.

Another time, I had O at the store, the carts were stuck together and I couldn't unstick them one handed. A guy about my age just Stood there watching! WTF MAN?

Ugh, rude people get me worked up lol.

  • Having 14 items and going through a 12 or less isn't that big of a deal. It sounds like she was having a bad day, and has probably had others customers do that to her too. In most stores, the cashier on the express lane will get in trouble for not informing the customer. But the way she went about it was completely rude.

  • I will add that it is totally ironic that most of you are saying you want the cashier to say hello. I am a customer service lead at a grocery store, in my 6 years of experience, I always say "hello, how are you?" But 8 times out 10 by the time I get to "how", the customer has cut me off and starts spitting numbers at me for their rewards card. Then never answers my intended question. All day Im thinking people are so rude, can't they just say "im fine, how are you?" Lol I wish I could get more customers like you all!

  • Weird. We weren't allowed to kick people out/tell them they had too much for the express lane when I worked at Target.

  • She was rude, but in her defense, you were probably the only nice person who came through her line all day so she vented her frustrations about the people who were ringing up 30 items and yelling at her about prices, bitching at her about the bags, whatever.

Being a cashier sucks.  When I did it, I got in trouble for using paper bags, but if i didn't automatically use the paper bags for certain customers, they would yell at me. And while, in your case, 14 items isn't really a big deal, just imagine how it is for her when people repeated disregard this, and then other customers yell at her about it. Because it happens all the time.

I would have made a complaint at the service desk before walking out.

This. I would have walked straight to the service desk and asked for the store manager. I've waited table and worked retail. My H was a store manager until earlier this year. I get it.  Customers can be rude but there is absolutely no reason to be act like that.

Sorry you had a bad experience.

  • Most of the cashiers at our grocery store are rude. They're usually too busy talking to one anther to say hello. There's only 3 or 4 that I know are friendly so I will wait in their line.
