Baby Names

Am I Crazy?

I'm expecting a baby girl in October and the name that I love is Grace Frances. I've always loved the name Grace and my mom's name is Frances.

My husband isn't crazy about Frances because it's old-fashioned, but that's one of the reasons I love it.

What does everyone think? Am I crazy to like Grace Frances? Does anyone have any alternatives to Frances as a middle name with Grace?

Thanks!!

Re: Am I Crazy?

  • I like Grace, and I like you are using Frances since it's a family name. It does has a lot of "s" sounds in there and doesn't have the best flow, but it works.

  • LOVE! I'm constantly trying to convince my husband to accept Frances as a name for a little girl! I know a little Frankie and its so cute, then when she is older Frances will age very well. Love love love this name.

ETA: I love grace too, I just agree with you on Frances being a very nice name!

  • I loooove Grace. It's so simple and pretty. And I think it sounds great with Frances. If your husband doesn't like it because it's old-fashioned, he might at least respect how meaningful the name is to you, and how honored your mom would be. I tend to think family signficance should trump taste when it comes to the middle name spot.

  • I LOVE Frances.  It's actually probably a lock for us for a girl's MN, since it's my granmother's name.  Yes, it's old-fashioned, and not cute. But I don't care. The meaning behind it outweighs all of that.

I'm a big fan of Grace also.  I don't think you're crazy at all.  Grace Frances may feel a little clunky (two names with hard consonants and both have the 'c' in them) depending on your last name, but who cares if you love it?

  • Yes, I know! I think Frances can be cute. People call my mom Franny and she loves it. Or, you could call your daughter Francie.

Grandpa called grandma "Fran."  There's a cousin Frances who has always gone by Frankie. And an aunt Francine who goes by Franny.  I love Francie, too!  We don't have one of those.

Also, a bit of a warning for girls with the name Frances: It's often misspelled Francis. Just remember to politely remind people of the rule: If there's an i, it's a guy. If there's an e, it's a she.

  • I love Grace Frances together.

My mn is Frances after my mom and I love it.  I gave it to my daughter as a mn too.

  • I think you should go with your gut. Frances is a family name, and she won't be referred to as Grace Frances all that much. Are their any family names on his side he may have wanted to use? When we had my daughter we named her Allyson Claire. The C in Claire is after my boyfriend's grandmother, Carmin. He wanted Allyson's middle name to be Carmin, but we felt they sounded odd together so we just chose a C name instead.

I think you should talk about it with your husband and see if you can compromise. :)

  • What about Francesca? Still a bit old-fashioned, but a little more modern than Frances.  I think Francesca Grace would sound pretty - you could still call her Grace if you wanted.  I have a friend with a little girl named Francesca, and she goes by Frankie - she's the cutest little girl.

  • I love Frances.  If we have another girl, her mn will be Frances...after the first woman in the Cabinet.  And Frances Houseman.
