I guess this will be kinda long--but here goes.
I am currently working as a paramedic for an area hospital--I work 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule. DH has the same job but he works steady M, Th, F. We were anticipating me going part-time/per-diem once the babies come so that we could totally avoid having to pay for child care.
I am also a certified music teacher--and I had been looking for a part-time job for this year but had no luck. (I was going to reduce my paramedic hours.) Anyway....if something full-time came up that was "perfect" than I would have considered it, but I didn't see anything really awesome this summer.
Today I found out that the district where I live has an "immediate" opening for a gr 7-8 band teacher....a job I think I would really like. I don't have the best chances in the world--they are looking for someone with some guitar experience, which I don't have--but you never know, so I might as well apply. My only concern is the whole pg thing! I don't think I'd tell them until I got the job and was working....but I am concerned they'd be able to sack me once I needed to go out on leave since that will probably be in April or May 2009 (babies due end of June).
Is it even worth applying for this? Would you have a moral quandary here? I feel bad misrepresenting myself as someone who would be able to take the job and run with it, especially if I wasn't even going to make it to the spring concert.... but it is a good position and I would hate to pass it up.
Thoughts? TIA!
Re: job dilemma--WWYD
I would go for it. Most non-SAIF's never even know they are pregnant at 7 weeks. Do NOT tell them you are pregnant. No need and not legally forced to tell them.
It's a job interview... you may or may not get it! Good luck!
Married 8.13.2005, M/C 12/8/06- 5 weeks, M/C 2/27/07- 7 weeks, M/C w/ D&C 8/10/09-6.5 weeks *Charles Lawrence born 5/2/08 @ 3:14am, 7lb 8oz, 20.5 inches. Clomid, Crinone and baby aspirin. *Alexandra Claire born 9/14/10 @ 9:52am 6lb 14oz, 20.5 inches. Femara, Crinone and baby aspirin.
I would apply for it-you have nothing to lose. You dont' have to tell them you are PG...they can't hire or not hire you because of it. Nor can they fire you because of taking leave. But since you aren't do until the end of June, you have a good chance of making it until at least mid may before you would need to go on leave, and even then-it will be questionable.
So I say go for it-you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
I would go for it. You don't want to ask yourself "what if" down the road if you didn't go for it. And, I wouldn't tell them you are pregnant. If you get it, you can tell them you "just found out" and don't worry about your leave, that can work itself out.
Good luck!!!!!
You don't even know if you'll get it-- I would definitely apply/interview. You may find it isn't as perfect of a job for you as you think.
They would have the right to not hold your job for you after you left to have the babies, as far as strict FMLA rules go-- the scholl district may have another rule...but it seems to me that if they do that, you just go back to your original plan aftter the babies are born. I'd assume you could always go back to being a paramedic, right?
