Cloth Diapering

Curious Newbie

Hi there!!

Please don't flame me for not delving deep into this forum.

I have already done some research on CD and have decided that I will be CD LO.  However, I have a couple of questions.  I already know I would prefer pocket and one-size designs.  But am still curious as to which brands are the best for these styles.  I have been recommended to try Thirsties and Flip, but am curious as to what other options there are, and which one are the best.

So, ladies, what are your favorite pocket or one-size designs??

  • As far a mainstream, Bum genius 4.0 pockets are very popular. Maybe look into a diaper trial.

    This.

Don't worry about flaming on this board... for the most part everyone is super supportive of newbie questions... we were all there at some point and had questions of our own.  I'd recommend the FAQ at the top and the web series Cloth Diapering 101 on youtube.

As for favorite brands, I haven't had trouble with any of the ones I have...Bumgenius 4.0, TotsBots, Happy Heinys, Blueberries, AMP, Swaddlebees OS AIO.  Love 'em all...(Swaddlebees are my favorite by far... but they are also more expensive...so I only have 4.)  Most people get prefolds and covers for the newborn stage because they are cheaper and most newborns don't fit into Onesize diapers until they are 9-10 lbs.  I used Bummis, Sweetpea and thirsties covers for newborn.  She was 2 months when One Size diapers fit her.

  • For pocket diapers, I like alvababy.  They are onesize pocket diapers, and the patterns are adorable.  Their website is a little hard to navigate, and they ship from China.  But you can't beat the price.

  • If are looking for a one size Pocket diaper than you don't want Thirsties or Flips.  Thirsties have a two step sizing system so you will need to buy Size 1 for the early days and than size 2 for later.  Flips are a hybrid diaper with a cloth or disposable option, it is one size, but not a pocket.

As for my favorite OS pockets, I like Bum Genius and Blueberry/Swaddlebees the best.

  • We use mostly Flip covers with inserts and prefolds, but have a few one-size pocket diapers.  We have a Fuzzibunz, which I don't care for.  It is hard to stuff - the PUL is sticky and the pocket is small.  But, it is a very trim diaper.  We also have Kawaii - I really like these.  They are a pretty good price, absorb well, are soft, and fits my baby well.  We also have some Oh Katy's - I think this company is going out of business and have found them hard to put on because it seems like there are 8 zillion snaps.  I tend to just leave some snaps undone.

  • I have to second that there is not much flaming here, at least I have never witnessed it :) The best advice I can give is to use a NB rental that has a good variety. Diaperparties.com has great options.

Another thing to remember is that while Kawaii and Alvababy are cheap it is for a reason. I have 2 Kawaii's (both were free off of orders from Kellyscloset) after 2 months of use they both leak from the wholes where the thread is... some people love them and have no problems, some people feel that although they need replacing more often that they are inexpensive enough that its not a big deal...

Personally I use a mix of pockets, AIO's, and pre folds. I never thought I would like prefolds but I do. They are my go to when I am at home, I don't use them with a cover so that my DD's bum can breathe. I thought I would love BG 4.0's I like them but not Love. I do not care for FuzziBunz (read I wouldn't buy them but if I get one as a gift I use it). I love Swaddlebee's (all of their products!) I want to get some Tots Bots and Knichernappies. I have GroVia AIO's that my hubby has a hard time with because of the side snapping but I really like. Also, Itti Bitti is good, IMO.

  • Thank you so much ladies for being kind and for all of your insight!

I want to do a home trial, but some only last a certain amount of days, then you pay full price for the package.  So I am nervous, I would forget to send them back etc....  Many have referred me to Jillian's Drawers, and I don't know if it is because I am inexperienced or what, but I find that site very confusing and their policies difficult to understand.

Edit: (added) I have also watched one full seminar of CD 101 series on YouTube, there seem to be about 3 "popular" seminars.  I have also watched a DVD on CD, that I am making my family watch as well.

I visited the diaperparties.com site, SO much easier to navigate than Jillian's Drawers!

CD 101 is a 7 part series.  Seems like you are doing your research!

sweetbottoms has a customizable diaper trial.  You register for the trial, order only what you want and if you choose to return it you get 90% store credit or 85% refund.  If you like all of the diapers, you can keep them all.  If you only want to return one or two that is also an option.  If I had done a trial I would have done this one.

I live in rural canada, so a diaper trial would have been a PITA... I ordered my newborn stash of prefolds/covers, a few pockets and a few All-in-ones.

Then I decided to just buy one of each of a few kinds of the one size diapers and then order more of what I liked... I had no problems with any of them so far and just chose a few favorites from those to order more of...  If I didn't like a particular brand and wanted to get rid of it to buy something else, the diapers have a great resale value.

  • More than just CD 101, there are TONS of videos on YouTube comparing and reviewing different brands of diapers.  You'll find so much information there.  It's great!  I also loved The Diaper Pin for reviews of almost anything CD related.  I obsessed like crazy when I was pregnant (and since then!) and found all of what I needed to know online.
