Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer?

Has anyone ever used or own one of these types of thermometers?  If so, what do you think?  Any recommendation as far as brand/specific thermometer?

I was thinking I'd like to get one for the babies, esp. since I can use it on both of them without worrying about spreading germs - at least it would be the most convenient option to prevent spreading germs.

Re: Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer?

  • I was going to register for one of those last time but my mom who's been an ER nurse for 30 plus years told me they are very inacurate. She said unfortunatly if you want an accurate reading on a baby you really need to go for an anal reading. I know it's not pleasant but I'd hate to not bring baby in for a high temp because the thermometer was off.

  • I have heard, and read, the same as pp.  I've read that these types of thermometers aren't real accurate.

It isn't comfortable (for you or baby) to do it rectally, but it does give the most accurate temperature.  DD was usually pretty good about getting her temp taken.  The thermometer we had (i think we took it from the hospital) came with some covers that were lubricated, that helped.

  • I'm an ER nurse in a children's hospital and we always check temperatures rectally for anyone under 2yrs old, it's the most accurate way to check & it doesn't hurt the baby (the temp probe is smaller than their poops!). If you're concerned about germs get your baby his/her own thermometer (they're not too expensive to buy at the drugstore).

  • For infants the most accurate temp is rectally, next is axillary (under the arm)
