Food Allergy

does anyone use culturelle?

My DD has mucusy stools and now specs of blood have started showing up.  I started eliminating dairy & soy (about a week now) the blood is still visible. I had tried an elimination diet 2 months ago and mucus still remained (after a month of no soy dairy or wheat) but now we are dealing with blood showing up :( the gastro said i can take culturelle along with the baby because it promotes intestinal health.  Have you guys ever taken it or given it to your baby? what has been your experience?

Re: does anyone use culturelle?

  • are you talking about the Culturelle probiotic?  (i just asked about this myself after getting an email with a link).

The only thing i can think of is that she may be allergic to something other than milk/soy.  It can be eggs, nuts or something else that is causing the blood / mucus.  The most common is milk and soy but i know it can be other food also.

    How old is your DD?

I have a friend that her DD had a tremendous amount of blood in her stool and she had to go on a milk/soy/egg/nut free diet. Can the doctors do a RAST test on her?

  • yes i was talking about culturelle pro biotic.  My DD is 4 months 3 weeks.  What is a RAST test?

I just spoke to my gastro today and he told me that i should be very strict in cutting out milk/soy (which iam) and then well see where to go from there if there is a need to cut out more or she might have to be put on formula which i really dont want:(

    RAST test - blood test

Most doctors won't do tests on a baby this young, but i know some will if there are serious issues. My allergist said she's tested a baby that's a few weeks old once but the norm is 6 months old.

if you continue with the diet, i wouldn't trust any restaurant for now. Make sure you avoid casein and whey since they are milk protein but sometimes does not specify (a lot of vegan cheeses have casein in it -which doesn't make it vegan but most vegans wouldn't know that)

    good luck!

  • I would suggest researching Inulin and FOS first before using them. I always suggest to people that they get plain probiotics WITHOUT those additives because they are new....genetically modified...and dangerous! They are supposed to only feed the good bacteria but they can also feed candida yeast and other nasties and cause imbalance in the gut.

it takes a few weeks on a strict NO dairy diet before you can truly tell if it is working. Sometimes even more than a month.

    Good luck!
