I was grocery shopping with my son today and this older lady (60s?) was in the canned soup section taking forever to make a decision and finally before leaving she goes "OMG I don't know how you grocery shop for kids! They are so expensive!" I looked at her kinda weird because 1. my son is only 15 months old and really doesn't eat that much. and 2. I had a cart full of produce and meat along with staples like salt, flour, sugar etc. My grocery bill is not huge by any means because I cook at home mostly from scratch. She then proceeds to say "Well, Unless you are on food stamps, then it is really affordable!". Was she implying that because I was delayed in responding to her that I was on food stamps (as if that really matters or is any of her business anyway)? I just found the whole situation very awkward and rude.

Her last comment didn't sink in until after she walked away. And then I was like "what the F is that supposed to mean??" I swear my response time is way to delayed for my good.
I'm like that too. Ten minutes later I think of 10,000 awesome replies that would have sooo burned.

So weird!
I think at 60+, so many folks start to lose their buffer, if they ever had one to begin with. My own grandmother, who I adore and usually has a great sense of humor, was trying to light-heartedly (? I guess?) talk about my aunt's inability to have kids (now I have 2 awesome adopted cousins) with my aunt standing right next to her, but it was really rather insulting to my aunt, even though I don't think she meant it that way... it was so uncomfortable!
