December 2011 Moms

Started Ferber tonight.

Yikes, it is rough! B woke up every 2.5 hours last night, it was terrible. I don't think teething is the problem right now. It took about 45 minutes tonight, I'm hoping it gets easier!
Any tips or advice would be appreciated, or just some good luck!

  • If they are ready it gets easier every night. Have a lovie or something in his crib to hold or snuggle when crying. This was a lifesaver for Lucas. We use an Aden and Ana's security blanket.

Consistency is key. Do not break the rules no matter how much you want to. Luckily my DH did most checks and was there for me emotionally.

I kept an insane log. I wrote time put down. Time asleep number of checks per sleep session, Total cry time, total sleep time. It helped me feel in control and see progress.

If it works it's huge. HUGE. Lucas was awful and now although not perfect he is in his crib all night and puts himself to sleep. I get to love on him all day and don't miss my aching back and frustration of rocking and singing him to sleep for an hour.

When it sucks it sucks but you have to tell yourself this will be the worst of it. We found sometimes he cried harder during checks therefore we spend less time in there. We also found his wind up mobile was/is a lifesaver. He also still sleeps with white noise. Good Luck!!

  • Thanks for all the advice hlc! Does Lucas use a paci? Brady does and that seemed to be one of our biggest problems tonight, when he would cry his paci would fall out and sometimes end up on the ground, so he would cry more until the check time was up. Then we went in and replaced the paci and it calmed him down a little and then repeat. If he could just keep it in it seems it'd really help, idk. After the 3, 5, and then 3 tens he was asleep. Hopefully it works!

  • A hug for you!  We're also starting tonight (I might be crazy).  I hope my baby loves me in the morning.  I'm sitting here crying, although not as hard as he is.  DH has been out of town for a few days and won't be back for a few more.  My 3YO is in bed but I doubt she can sleep with him screaming.  He's been waking more frequently during the night and I just cannot take it anymore.  I have a hard time falling back to sleep after putting him down so I feel like I don't have a choice.  Crying

  • I had to start again too. We did it when he was 4.5 months. He has been going down drowsy at night almost every night since. Our middle of the night wakings is what I have not been consistent with so I have to tell myself I have got to do this and be strong for both of our sakes.

I would try and go without the paci. We weaned our DS off the paci when we were sleep training and he hasn't looked back. It's hard if they fall asleep with the paci and then can't put it back in when they wake up in the middle of the night. Then they can't soothe themselves back to sleep because they are missing that sleep association.
